Energy Department selects SwRI for power plant demonstration project

Southwest Research Institute and Thar Energy LLC have received $700,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy to participate in a demonstration project that can remove carbon dioxide in coal-fired emission plants, while improving overall plant performance.

SwRI and Thar received one of eight awards given by the Energy Department to support the development of carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies for coal-fired plant emissions.

The two organizations will demonstrate what?s called a supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle using pressurized oxy-combustion. This process uses pure oxygen instead of air as the primary oxidant.

?The goal of this one-year effort is two-fold: to achieve 90 percent CO2 removal at no more than a 35 percent increase in the cost of electricity and to achieve high overall plant efficiencies ? ,? says Klaus Brun, a program director in SwRI?s Mechanical Engineering Division.

San Antonio-based SwRI is an independent, nonprofit, applied research and development organization. The institute has more than 3,000 employees and an annual research volume of more than $581 million.
