Currency trading can provide a significant source of income for some professional traders. But for other investors, foreign exchange transactions are simply an additional source of income that allows them to invest their hard earned money. With the growing popularity of currency trading, more and more individuals seek to use forex trading as an alternative investment vehicle, in a sense replacing stock market trading.
There are several types of traders in the foreign exchange market:
The first type of trader is the full-time professional trader. The majority of these traders are day trading, they invest in the Forex on a daily basis and are sometimes scalpers who profit from small movements of currency pairs using high leverage. These seasoned traders have extensive experience that allows them to develop effective forex trading strategies.
The second type of Forex trader does not really have time to do forex trading on a daily basis. These investors either do not have the time to monitor the financial markets themselves or are essentially long-term traders who wage their ?bets? on large forex movements. They do not really care about small foreign exchange fluctuations and trade with little leverage.
The third type of forex traders are slowly emerging in the world of forex investing, they prefer to let managers manage their accounts for them. These investors do not have time to study the financial markets themselves, but are well informed about the possibilities of profit or losses that may quickly occur in the forex market.
There are other types of traders who are not in the list because they are not individuals, such as hedge funds, brokers or hedgers who protect themselves to ensure a fixed price for their productions.
If you are interested in investing money on the forex market, make sure to set clear investment objectives. You must not only determine the amount you are willing to invest, but also the time that you can afford to devote to the study of trading. Your psychological profile and personality must determine your trading style.
Before you begin trading, you should make a short checklist containing, at the very least, the following: 1) define your trading strategy (hedging? scalping? trading with the trend? trying to identify tops and bottoms?), 2) find a broker that meets your requirements (for example, you may want a broker that allows scalping, or that allows you to trade mini-lots, or that lets you trade metals and commodities as well as currency pairs) and 3) make sure that the broker is licensed and accredited by a regulatory body (for example: the FSC in the Republic of Mauritius).
ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Cornell researchers have created an autonomous flying robot that is as smart as a bird when it comes to maneuvering around obstacles.
Able to guide itself through forests, tunnels or damaged buildings, the machine could have tremendous value in search-and-rescue operations. Small flying machines are already common, and GPS technology provides guidance. Now, Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science, and his team are tackling the hard part: how to keep the vehicle from slamming into walls and tree branches. Human controllers can't always react swiftly enough, and radio signals may not reach everywhere the robot goes.
The test vehicle is a quadrotor, a commercially available flying machine about the size of a card table with four helicopter rotors. Saxena and his team have already programmed quadrotors to navigate hallways and stairwells using 3-D cameras. But in the wild, these cameras aren't accurate enough at large distances to plan a route around obstacles. So, Saxena is building on methods he previously developed to turn a flat video camera image into a 3-D model of the environment using such cues as converging straight lines, the apparent size of familiar objects and what objects are in front of or behind each other -- the same cues humans unconsciously use to supplement their stereoscopic vision.
Graduate students Ian Lenz and Mevlana Gemici trained the robot with 3-D pictures of such obstacles as tree branches, poles, fences and buildings; the robot's computer learns the characteristics all the images have in common, such as color, shape, texture and context -- a branch, for example, is attached to a tree. The resulting set of rules for deciding what is an obstacle is burned into a chip before the robot flies. In flight the robot breaks the current 3-D image of its environment into small chunks based on obvious boundaries, decides which ones are obstacles and computes a path through them as close as possible to the route it has been told to follow, constantly making adjustments as the view changes. It was tested in 53 autonomous flights in obstacle-rich environments -- including Cornell's Arts Quad -- succeeding in 51 cases, failing twice because of winds. The results were presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Portugal Oct. 7-12.
Saxena plans to improve the robot's ability to respond to environment variations such as winds, and enable it to detect and avoid moving objects, like real birds; for testing purposes, he suggests having people throw tennis balls at the flying vehicle.
The project is supported by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

GENEVA (AP) ? Swiss banking giant UBS AG is to cut as many as 10,000 employees, or some 15 percent of its staff, to drastically shrink its ailing investment bank.
The news of the layoffs came as Switzerland's biggest bank posted another big loss for the third quarter. It said Tuesday that the job cuts are part of a strategy to shore up profits.
As a result, UBS said it needs to reduce its headcount to "around 54,000" by 2015, down from its current 64,000 employees in 57 countries.
Some 7,500 jobs are to be cut mainly in London and the United States, where UBS has a prominent building and trading operations in Stamford, Conn., near New York City. The other 2,500 cuts are to be in Switzerland.
Investors cheered the move and the stock was trading 6 percent higher in early trading in Zurich at 13.88 Swiss francs.
The announcement of the job cuts came as the Zurich-based bank posted a loss of 2.17 billion Swiss francs ($2.31 billion) in the third quarter, in contrast to last year' equivalent net profit of 1.02 billion Swiss francs.
UBS blamed the loss on a 3.1 billion francs charge at the investment bank and an 863 million francs hit linked to an accounting rule on how banks must value their debt.
Banks can post gains if the value of their debt falls, because it would theoretically become cheaper for the bank to repurchase that debt. But the rule also says that when a bank's debt increases, it must take a write-down because it would theoretically have to pay more to buy back its own debt on the open market.
In what it called "a significant acceleration" in its transformation, the bank said it would sharpen its focus on the investment bank and appoint a new executive, Andrea Orcel, formerly of Bank of America Corp., to lead it. The current co-head of the investment bank, Carsten Kengeter, is stepping down from the group's executive board to unwind the non-core assets.
UBS said it also plans to save 3.4 billion francs in additional costs through 2015, but that the reorganization will result in restructuring charges of 3.3 billion francs over the next three years including about a half-billion francs in the fourth quarter.
UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti said the investment unit, which has been hit by a series of costly blunders in recent years, will "continue to be a significant global player in its core businesses."
But tighter industry-wide requirements for banks to increase their capital cushion also have hurt profitability as banks have less cash to invest.
"It can't get better than this point for us to act," he told reporters.
Ermotti, who took over in November after the discovery of unauthorized trading last year, has been downsizing the investment bank to meet stricter capital requirements and shrinking profits due largely to Europe's sovereign debt crisis.
Former UBS trader Kweku Adoboli has been facing trial in London this month on charges of committing fraud that cost the bank $2.3 billion. He has told the jury that the losses came after senior traders persuaded him to change from a bearish to a bullish point of view in July 2011.
But the bank also has been under fire on other fronts. In 2008, it was forced to seek a bailout from the Swiss government when it was hard hit by the financial crisis and its fixed-income unit had more than $50 billion in losses.
UBS is one of several global banks being investigated in the U.S. and other countries for alleged rigging of benchmark interest rates known as Libor, or London Interbank Offered Rate. In April, Ermotti said Switzerland's tax disputes with the United States and some European nations are "an economic war" putting 20,000 jobs at risk.
Switzerland has been trying to shed its image as a tax haven, signing deals with the United States, Germany and Britain to provide greater assistance to foreign tax authorities seeking information on their citizens' accounts in the Alpine nation.
But the tax agreements have drawn fire from Switzerland's nationalist People's Party, which won more than a quarter of the vote in last year's general election, with some lawmakers saying they will try to block the treaties through referendums.

The AACAP Elaine Schlosser Lewis Award for Research on Attention-Deficit Disorder was established through support of the Elaine Schlosser Lewis Fund in 1994. The award of $5,000 is given annually for the best paper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry on attention-deficit disorder, written by a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and published between July 2010 and June 2011. This award is named in memory of Dr. Owen Lewis's late mother, Elaine Schlosser Lewis, who was a teacher and advocate on behalf of children.
The researchers compared osmotic-release methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) and placebo in 303 participants, aged 13-18, who met DSM-IV criteria for ADHD and substance abuse disorder (SUD), and who were concurrently receiving cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for SUD. The study found that OROS-MPH was not more effective than placebo for ADHD or on reduction in substance use among the adolescents, but was associated with modest clinical improvement on secondary ADHD and substance treatment outcomes, such as problem-solving and managing drug/alcohol temptations.
The researchers address questions such as the reliability of the assessments and of using multiple informants, the adolescents' medication compliance, and whether or not the efficacy of OROS-MPH was compromised by the participants' use of drugs/alcohol. The authors highlight the need for future studies to address the effect of CBT for SUD in the context of ADHD, and to determine the most effective methods of evaluating ADHD treatment outcomes and of assessing adolescents with co-occuring disorders.

CNBC's Steve Liesman weighs in on the potential economic impact of the storm.

While Hurricane Sandy is on its way to causing untold billions of dollars in damage, its impact on the stock market is likely to be isolated but unpredictable.
Exchanges across the U.S. closed Monday and could stay that way Tuesday as the potentially history-making storm stomps its way up the East Coast.
Futures traders made bets Monday that the stock marketwould open lower ? about 48 points off on the Dow industrials ? once trading resumes. (Read More: How the Decision to Close the Exchanges Came Down)
From there, though, the market action could be volatile.
"Investors have every reason to be on edge as they await the conclusion of natural, corporate and political events," said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at Standard & Poor's. "Our belief is that November will be a month to remember."
Interestingly, Stovall said stocks usually rise in the aftermath of major storms.
Of the 13 worst hurricanes in U.S. history, only Ike in August 2008, which struck as the economy was entering freefall, and Hugo in 1989, saw stocks that were negative in the three-month and six-month intervals afterwards. The median six-month gains approached 6 percent.
"History says that hurricanes typically don?t trigger market declines," Stovall said. "Individually, the market?s performance following major hurricanes has been uneven, as equities are more likely driven by wider-reaching global events than localized natural disasters."
Still, Hurricane Sandyis likely to leave a mark.
The most obvious area would be on property and casualty insurers, which will have to wrestle with maybe $5 billion or more of claims. (Read?More: Investors Are Already Bailing on Insurance Stocks)
Analysts at Bernstein Research expect some familiar names such as Travelers , Allstate and Chubb to take some early hits but ultimately rebound.
"As a longer-term investor, even with all the companies in our coverage likely to announce losses in coming days, we're just not that concerned, for the storm seems less powerful than broad, and even dramatic headline economic losses typically end up being much more muted insurable events," Bernstein's Josh Stirling and Michael Kovac said in a research note.
Following Hurricane Irene in August 2011, the insurer stocks traded down as much as 8 percent then recovered as damages became known and investors realized the companies could handle the losses.
"We can expect the market will continue to sell the stocks, given headlines and uncertainty, and then begin to buy them back when the companies report manageable losses," the Bernstein analysts said. "For many, this passing and predictable weakness presents an opportunity to build positions, now at more attractive levels, in the leading non-life writers to take advantage of a cyclical pricing recovery."
Retail stocks, particularly home improvement outfits like Home Depot and Lowe's, also will be in view. For those stocks, the reaction is often the opposite of the approach to insurers.
In the immediate aftermath of storms, "the market feasts on the enthusiasm but then any gains are given back once math is done that the actual impact to sales (less so earnings as storm precaution items are usually low-margin commodity-type goods) will be muted," Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at NBG Productions in New York, said in a report.
Sozzi had a few quick observations about what to expect from Sandy:
Homebuilders such as Toll Brothers, D.R. Horton and Hovnanian could benefit from demand for rebuilding from the storm but are just as likely to get hit by damages to products, shell buildings and replacement costs.
