Beavers help contain fuel spill, recover slowly

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Talk about unlikely heroes.

A group of at least six beavers at a Utah bird refuge have emerged as key players in helping contain a fuel leak that left half of them with severe burns. The Chevron Corp. fuel spill leaked about 27,000 gallons of crude oil into soil and marshes at Willard Bay State Park last week after a split in a Salt Lake City-to- Spokane, Wash. pipeline.

The beavers' dam blocked a hefty portion of diesel from rolling onto the bay, though it's uncertain exactly how much, officials said. Three of the beavers were rescued earlier this week, and three more that were rescued Tuesday night are being cared for under a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah program.

"That dam absolutely saved the bay," said Dalyn Erickson, a wildlife specialist running the program. The dam held fuel in place and kept it from going any further, she said.

The beavers that were part of the group rescued Tuesday night had burns on their skin and eyes, and only patches of fur left on their bodies. Erickson said she worries that some of the newly rescued beavers might not survive the fallout from the spill. It's unknown whether any other beavers might remain near the fuel leak site and have yet to be rescued, officials said.

One of the new beavers, a head-strong mother, is resisting the three-a-day cleanings with Dawn dish soap. So Erickson and other workers had to sedate her. Workers brought in more than 40 large bottles of the soap to scrub the beavers clean during their hour-long baths.

The three animals rescued earlier in the week arrived at the center slicked with fuel but burn-free. They now show signs of recovery, Erickson said. For example, they're rubbing their bellies in an effort to groom themselves. One of them can't stop eating, Erickson says, a sign that he's getting stronger. Another is breathing gustily because the diesel burnt his nostrils. The last one is still exhausted, dozing off during bath time.

Protecting other animals and plants is part of the beavers' daily routine, said Phil Douglass, spokesman for the Department of Wildlife Resources. Beavers are natural homemakers, he said, crediting beaver dams, or "lodges," for drawing moose to Utah because moose like still waters for drinking. The dams also keep the water cool for trout and make surrounding areas healthier by inviting more plant growth.

The leak is Chevron's third in Utah in the last three years. In June 2010, a spill involved more than 30,000 gallons of crude oil near Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City. And in December 2010, a leak near the same site involved about 21,000 gallons.

John Whitehead of the Division of Water Quality said trace amounts of fuel seeped into the ground, then bled into the bay, but did not flow overtop the water. The state is studying water samples to see how the spill could affect people, animals and birds around the refuge.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the spill.

The Federal office dealing with pipelines has barred Chevron from reopening the pipeline until it gets government approval.

"Big Data" for Cancer Care - Ron Winslow - News - AllThingsD

A major oncology group is launching an ambitious project to collect data on the care of hundreds of thousands of cancer patients and use it to help guide treatment of other patients across the health-care system.

Cancer doctors would be able to consult the database, much like doing a Google search. They would get advice on treatment strategies that might work for their patients based on how similar patients fared in practices around the U.S.

Virtual games help the blind navigate unknown territory

Mar. 27, 2013 ? On March 27thJoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) will publish a new video article by Dr. Lotfi Merabet showing how researchers in the Department of Ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School have developed a virtual gaming environment to help blind individuals improve navigation skills and develop a cognitive spatial map of unfamiliar buildings and public locations.

"For the blind, finding your way or navigating in a place that is unfamiliar presents a real challenge," Dr. Merabet explains. "As people with sight, we can capture sensory information through our eyes about our surroundings. For the blind that is a real challenge? the blind will typically use auditory and tactile cues."

The technique utilizes computer generated layouts of public buildings and spatial sensory feedback to synthesize a virtual world that mimics a real world navigation task. In the game, participants must find jewels and carry them out of the building, without being intercepted by roaming monsters that steal the jewels and hide them elsewhere.

Participants interface with the virtual building by using a keyboard and wearing headphones that play auditory cues that help spatially orient them to the world around them. This interaction helps users generate an accurate mental layout of the mimicked building. Dr. Merabet and his colleagues are also exploring applications of this technology with other user interfaces, like a Wii Remote or joystick.

"We have developed software called ABES, the Audio Based Environment Simulator that represents the actual physical environment of the Carol Center for the Blind in Newton Massachusetts. The participants will use the game metaphor to get a sense of the whole building through open discovery, allowing people to learn room layouts more naturally than if they were just following directions."

The technology will invariably be useful for the 285 million blind people world-wide, 6 million of which live in the United States. It will also have applications beyond the blind community for individuals with other visual impairments, cognitive deficits, or those recovering from brain injuries.

Dr. Merabet considers publication in JoVE's video format especially helpful. "It is conceptually difficult for a sighted person to understand 'a video game for blind people.' What JoVE allows us to do is break down layouts of the game and strategy, show how the auditory cues can be used and how we quantify performance going from the virtual game to the physical world."

Wall Street bonuses projected to rise 15 percent this year: consultant

By Lauren Tara LaCapra

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bonuses at Wall Street firms will rise 15 percent this year despite ongoing pressure from investors, regulators and politicians about compensation levels, according to compensation-consulting firm Johnson Associates Inc.

The projected rise in pay would come after a 5 percent increase in 2012, which was considered "disappointing," Alan Johnson, head of the firm, said in a presentation to the Wall Street Compensation and Benefits Association that was released publicly on Friday.

Johnson expects chief executives to receive pay packages of $12 million to $25 million, even as investors question what they perceive as a misalignment between performance and pay.

"Overarching frustrations (and) questions remain unsolved," Johnson said. Among those questions are, "What is the appropriate balance between employees and shareholders?" and "Why can't incentives go to zero?" he added.

Johnson's projections - based on his work with banks, brokerages and asset management firms - are closely watched on Wall Street, particularly as compensation remains a hot-button issue for investors and taxpayers alike.

Since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008 - and the ensuing backlash against bonuses paid to employees of bailed-out banks - the industry has made several changes to compensation plans. Base salaries have gone up, while more pay is deferred with clawback provisions to protect banks if deals that seem profitable at first eventually go awry.

A new "say on pay" measure that allows U.S. shareholders to vote on pay packages awarded to senior executives has also had an impact on executive compensation. Last year, Citigroup Inc shareholders embarrassed the bank by voting down former Chief Executive Vikram Pandit's pay. The bank has since made changes to its compensation practices for top executives.

The European Union and Switzerland have also approved compensation caps that limit banker pay to a certain portion of base salary.

Yet those provisions have failed to prevent banks from paying out higher bonuses, even in years when performance suffers. Credit Suisse Group AG gave its CEO a big raise last year, even though its profits fell.

The median bank or asset manager paid out a greater portion of revenue to employees in 2012 than they did the previous year, Johnson Associates said. That rise comes despite staff cuts last year at most major financial-services firms.

Payouts of deferred compensation from prior years skews those figures higher, according to the presentation. It is difficult to tell on a firm-specific basis how much of a compensation expense pertains to prior-year awards, because most firms do not disclose those figures.

The lack of transparency about how compensation and performance are linked will continue to hurt banks this year, Johnson said.

Google Reader Who? Feedly Became Top News App On iPhone, iPad & Android This Week; New App Now Awaiting Approval

feedly-logoWhere are the users headed following news of Google Reader's shutdown? To Feedly, it seems. We already heard the company announce it had passed half a million new users, but more importantly, Feedly is now winning on mobile, too. According to new U.S. App Store and Google Play data, Feedly is leaving competitors like Newsblur and Reeder far behind. Even though Google Reader will remain for a few months more, Feedly became the number one news app across all three top mobile platforms (iPhone, iPad and Android) this week. It even climbed into the "Top Overall" section within all three stores.

Biden, Bloomberg urge Congress to have ?courage?

Biden and Bloomberg at City Hall (Screenshot via NYC Mayor's Office Live Feed)NEW YORK?Vice President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a joint appeal to members of Congress, urging lawmakers to ignore politics and do the ?right thing? by passing new federal gun-control laws.

In an appearance at City Hall, Biden and Bloomberg were joined by family members of some of those killed in December?s mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in urging Congress to immediately pass legislation including stricter rules on background checks and a ban on assault weapons, which they both described as ?weapons of war.?

?It?s time for the political establishment to show the courage that your daughter showed,? Biden told the father of Lauren Rousseau, a Sandy Hook teacher killed while trying to protect her students.

The vice president signaled the White House wasn?t giving up on its push to ban assault weapons, insisting ?this is not about anybody?s constitutional right to own a weapon.?

He added, ?For all of those who say we can?t and shouldn?t ban assault weapons, for all those who say the politics is just too hard, how can they say that? When you take a look at those 20 beautiful babies and what happened to them? And those six teachers and administrators? Think about Newtown. Think about Newtown."

Biden's comments came just days after Senate Democrats dropped an assault weapons ban from their proposed package of gun reforms, arguing it would kill any chance of passing any new gun laws.

Bloomberg, who has emerged as one of the leading voices in favor of new gun-control laws in the aftermath of Newtown, called on lawmakers to have ?courage.? He argued that if new gun-control laws don?t pass this year, at least 12,000 people are likely to die from gun violence in 2013 alone, based on past statistics.

?In the end, what Congress has to decide is whether it?s politically popular or is it the right thing to do,? Bloomberg said.

The mayor insisted ?there is no debate? among the majority of Americans about the need for tougher background checks and bans on sales of high-capacity magazines and assault rifles.

At one point, Biden praised Bloomberg for his advocacy on guns, saying ?no support has been more consequential than the support coming from Mayor Bloomberg.?

After Biden and Bloomberg spoke, Neil Heslin, whose 6-year-old son Jesse was killed at Newtown, approached the podium and issued an emotional plea for members of Congress to pass new gun laws.

?I'm really ashamed to see that Congress doesn?t have the guts to make a change,? Heslin said, speaking in a somber tone that was barely audible. ?I never thought my son would be a victim. I wish it upon nobody what I have had to go through.?

Boycott Workfare ? Blog Archive ? A4E Communications Blockade ...

Workfare: doesn?t work and not fair. Photo: Howard Jones

Yesterday, aside from a few votes against, Labour lined up with Conservative and Lib Dems to enable the workfare bill to go through by abstaining. Not only did politicians enable a retroactive law be enacted, they also deprived 225,000 people of justice, effectively robbing ?130 million in welfare payments people were lawfully due.

But don?t get mad, get even. A4e is one of the biggest beneficiaries of Government welfare policy. In 2011 the company turnover was ?180 million, 100% of which came from the public coffers. Out of this the bosses shared out ?11 million between them. Today is their turn.

A4e have a catastrophic record of failing to meet even the paltry minimum targets set by the Department for Work and Pensions for finding people jobs on the workfare scheme, the Work Programme. You have more chance of finding a job without their bullying ?back to work? tactics.

Not content with what amounts to the officially sanctioned scam of lucrative welfare to work contracts from their friends in Government there are numerous accusations of fraud against them, where records are apparently falsified, so that they can claim even more public money for not doing their job. They are further subsidised by the public by their use of mandatory unpaid labour within the company as well. The costs of Workfare are socialised while the profits are privatised.

We are asking everyone to make their voice heard once more. Contact A4e and complain about their involvement in Workfare.

The aim is to shut down their communications as much as possible, to reclaim some of the time we have paid for with our taxes and distract them from hassling unemployed and disabled people for a while. They may not listen to individual complaints, but they will take notice when they can?t do their day-to-day activities for the sheer volume of complaints coming in! Be polite.

Accused NYC hit-and-run driver charged with manslaughter

NEW YORK (AP) ? A motorist already accused in a horrific hit-and-run traffic accident that killed a pregnant woman and her husband in Brooklyn was charged Tuesday with three counts of second-degree manslaughter, including one for the death of the couple's premature child.

Julio Acevedo also was indicted on three new counts of criminally negligent homicide to go along with a lesser charge, announced earlier this month, of leaving the scene of an accident. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.

"While we knew it was a snowy evening and the defendant was speeding, our investigation has developed additional information concerning the nature of Mr. Acevedo's conduct leading up to the fatal crash," Brooklyn District Attorney Hynes said in statement.

Hynes cited evidence that Acevedo was traveling nearly 70 miles per hour ? more than twice the legal speed limit ? on March 3 when he crashed into a hired car carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber, who were on their way to a hospital. Police had previously put his speed at about 60 mph.

In addition, firefighter and civilian witnesses described Acevedo driving a borrowed BMW recklessly and accelerating as he passed their vehicles and rounded a curve moments before impact, prosecutors said.

Good Samaritans who stopped to help the crash victims told investigators that Acevedo assured them he wasn't hurt. Prosecutors allege that he slipped away on foot, fully aware of the carnage.

The Glaubers, both 21, died that day. Their son, delivered by cesarean section, died a day later.

The deaths left the couple's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn grief stricken and touched off an intense manhunt for the 44-year-old suspect, who served time in the 1990s for a shooting conviction. He surrendered in Bethlehem, Pa., after five days on the run.

Defense attorney Kathleen Julian said Tuesday that her client would continue to fight the charges.

"The case should be decided on the facts and not on public outcry," the lawyer said.

Acevedo's family has described him as a dedicated family man who quit his job to become a stay-at-home father. His mother told the Daily News he's "not the monster they're portraying him to be."

Acevedo is being held without bail.

Florida campaign for medical marijuana gets financial backers

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Two top Democratic fundraisers in Florida have committed to providing the money and know-how to get the question of legalizing medical marijuana on the state ballot in 2014.

"I'm prepared to keep raising money and writing checks until I get the signatures to put it on the ballot," attorney John Morgan said late on Tuesday.

Morgan, who routinely hosts presidents and national political figures at his Orlando-area home, recently signed on as chairman of People United for Medical Marijuana-Florida, a grassroots campaign that operated on a shoestring until now.

Morgan was recruited by Ben Pollara, a lobbyist and fundraiser for President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. Pollara recently became treasurer of the medical marijuana campaign.

The group lacked the money to wage a high-profile campaign and couldn't collect enough signatures to get the medical marijuana legalization proposal on the ballot in November.

"We were just scraping together pennies," said Kim Russell, the Orlando woman who founded People United four years ago.

The group could barely afford to photocopy the petition, she said. Now, it has commissioned a poll and plans to hire a company to manage the petition drive.

"It's a 180-degree turnaround," Russell said.

By law, the campaign needs to collect signatures of almost 700,000 registered voters to get a constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana on the ballot in November 2014.

Pollara estimated the campaign will cost $10 million.

He said he jumped on board after the 2012 elections when Massachusetts, Colorado and Washington passed laws legalizing marijuana for either medical or recreational use.

A poll he commissioned for People United found support in Florida for medical marijuana at 70 percent. A majority of both Republicans and Democrats support passage, and the only group opposed consisted of people who identified themselves as very conservative, he said.

"Looking at the poll, the support is really broad and I think there is room to grow our support. I don't think there is going to be well-funded organized opposition to this. I think we've got a pretty decent chance if we get on the ballot," Pollara said.

Morgan's interest in medical marijuana dates back more than a decade to when his father was dying from esophageal cancer and emphysema. One of his brothers would bring him marijuana.

"He would smoke it or eat it and his nerves were steadied, his pain went away, his nausea went away, he had an appetite. It wasn't a wonderful way to die tethered to a machine but at least he was not being tortured," Morgan said.

Russell, a former real estate broker, said she began the campaign after her father, now 68, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He turned down marijuana even though she believed it could have reduced his tremors and increased his mobility, as well as slowed the progression of the disease.

"He refused to break the law," Russell said.

Morgan, who put his money behind a successful 2004 constitutional amendment raising Florida's minimum wage, said he thinks he can recruit an "army of angels" to help gather the necessary signatures for the ballot initiative.

"I believe there is going to be kind of an uprising of people who have needed it in the past or had a loved one who needed it who are going to say I don't want this to happen to someone else," Morgan said.

Video: Sunnis, Shiites blame US for Iraq?s unrest

>>> unleashed shock and awe. a massive assault that lit up the night sky in baghdad . we were told it would be a quick war. it was about finding and stopping weapons of mass destruction and we would be greeted as liberator. that did not turn out to be the case. now a decade later a clear majority of americans say the iraq war wasn't worth it. the cost in american lives or dollars. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel spent the better part of the last decade covering the war. he has our report tonight.

>> reporter: today, baghdad looked like the place many american troops will remember. more than a dozen bombings, dozens dead. ten years after president bush launched shock and awe and toppled saddam hussein , the iraq war has started again. sunnis versus shiites. it's their fight now. but both sides blame the united states for blundering in, looking for weapons of mass destruction that weren't there, undoing iraq 's delicate religious balance. ardly the stability desired after more than a million u.s. troops deployed to iraq . nearly 4,500 of them killed. 32,000 wounded. 130,000 iraqi civilians killed. and the cost, according to a new study, around $2 trillion. perhaps much more. back in 2003 , the american people were told the war would be quick and cheap, maybe even paid for by iraqi oil money.

>> there is a lot of money to pay for this that doesn't have to be u.s. taxpayer money. it starts with the assets of the iraqi people .

>> reporter: it didn't work out that way. u.s. forces stayed for nine years. captain a.j. boys is now stationed in virginia, married with a six-week-old daughter.

>> three buildings down from the building you engaged --

>> reporter: we first met him in 2008 under fire building a wall in baghdad 's satar city. he knows iraq has problems now but thinks his unit's sacrifice was worth it.

>> the price of freedom is amazing. our unit lost soldiers. we lost friends -- both iraqi and american. it was a very tough sacrifice. but i think in the end, i think it will be okay.

>> reporter: what did the u.s. accomplish in iraq ? saddam hussein was removed from power. free elections were held and hundreds, maybe thousands of al qaeda -inspired militants were killed. but the war also created thousands more. iraq didn't become a stable u.s.-friendly democracy, but a shiite-led state with close ties to iran, still at war with itself. a big legacy of the iraq war is that extreme reluctance by the white house to become more involved in other foreign conflicts, especially the one in syria right now. here in jerusalem, the president is expected to arrive tomorrow. syria is just next door. it will be on the agenda as that conflict gets even more violent. today there are reports in syria of a chemical weapons attack. they are still not confirmed. both sides, the rebels and the government are trading accusations. u.s. officials are trying to determine if chemical weapons were even used. if they were, it could be a tipping point and trigger deeper u.s. involvement. brian?

>> richard engel in israel prior to the president's arrival there. richard, thanks.

Vaccines May Wear Off: Consider Getting Your Childhood Vaccinations Again

Vaccines May Wear Off: Consider Getting Your Childhood Vaccinations AgainWe vaccinate children against a handful of illnesses at an early age, but now evidence shows that these vaccines seem to wear off after a number of years. If you want to avoid something awful like whooping cough, you should speak with your doctor about getting vaccinated again.

How long does the whooping cough vaccination last? One study shows you get about three years, and other sources expect a little more. Vaccines are supposed to create antibodies that last a lifetime, so this evidence may seem strange. Consider, however, that flu vaccines are offered yearly because the virus changes. Whether that's the case with whooping cough or any other illnesses is still unknown, but if you want to protect yourself further you should ask your doctor about getting vaccinated again.

Why North Korea is turning up the heat again

North Korea's military is vowing to cancel the 1953 cease-fire that effectively ended the Korean War, straining frayed ties in the region as the UN moves to impose new sanctions.

It?s been a dramatic?week on the Korean Peninsula, culminating with a threat from North Korea to break the 60-year truce with the South and the subsequent terse warning from South Korea's military Wednesday that it would respond to any attack from North Korea with ?strong and stern measures.?

In case you missed it, this comes on the heels of China's agreement to sanction the North, and former NBA star Dennis Rodman?s debrief on his basketball diplomacy trip to the world?s most isolated country ??and, lest we forget it, rumors of an expansion of the Kim dynasty.?

The North's bombast also comes ahead of planned military exercises during an especially tense period. The?US and South Korea?s regular combined field-training exercises?are set for early next week, and North Korea has been observed planning their own exercises, which could set the stage for a clash as happened in 2010.?The deadly?shelling of Yeonpyeong Island broke out after North Korea claimed that the South had fired into its waters during routine exercises.?

The Christian Science Monitor points out that the North?s threat of violence is of course nothing new???each year the US and South Korea have joint military exercises and each year the North loudly protests with threats. North Korea has even claimed to abandon its armistice with the South once before ? in 2009, when, like today, it was facing a new round of sanctions for a nuclear test.

?Maybe North Korea should check its files, because they already abrogated the armistice in May 2009,? says Bruce Klingner, a Northeast?Asia?expert at the Heritage Foundation?s Asian Studies Center in Washington. ?They said at the time they had abrogated it and were no longer bound by it,? Mr. Klinger says, ?so I guess you could say history is repeating itself.?

And it remains to be seen how strictly China will impose the new sanctions.?

Cheng Xiaohe, a Korea watcher at?Renmin University?in Beijing?told the Monitor?s Peter Ford there:

?China and the DPRK need each other.? While Pyongyang depends on Chinese aid and trade to stay afloat, Beijing is anxious to keep at least one regional nation friendly in the face of Washington?s ?pivot? to?Asia, which is widely seen here as a bid to contain China.

Still, he says:

Since coming to power a little over a year ago, Kim Jong-un ?has brushed aside Chinese friendship and made China feel extremely uncomfortable.?

And that has made Beijing?s leaders more apt to do more to express displeasure, such as urging the North to show restraint.

"The Korean War armistice is significant in terms of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily press briefing Wednesday, reports Voice of America.?

Whether the North will listen is another question.?

(AP) ? Buckingham Palace officials say Queen Elizabeth II will resume her royal duties next week after a brief illness.

Officials said Friday the queen and her husband Prince Philip plan to attend a Westminster Abbey service Monday to mark Commonwealth Day with another event scheduled later in the week.

The 86-year-old monarch was hospitalized overnight on Sunday for treatment of gastroenteritis. It was her first hospitalization in a decade.

Officials said the queen's overall health remains good and she is not cutting back on her activities, although taxing overseas travel has been reduced.

The 91-year-old Philip has been treated for heart disease in recent years. He has said he plans to attend fewer events and to scale back his charity events.

2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State

One of the biggest defensive linemen in this year's draft, Johnathan Hankins shows surprising balance and grace for a man his size. While he does not (and won't ever) offer much as a pass rusher, Hankins has the size, feet, and balance to play multiple positions along the line in a 3-4 defense, although he is still under-developed as a true nose tackle and is more comfortable in space at defensive end and at three-technique right now.

?

Overall Strengths

+ Impressive size

+ Relatively light feet for his build

+ Good balance

?

Overall Weaknesses

- Lacks burst in all phases

- Slow, winding punch and inconsistent hand use

- Not great at the point of attack inside

Arm Length

40 Time

6?3?

The fourth-heaviest defensive lineman at the combine, Hankins has a squatty, fire-hydrant-like build, which will immediately make him attractive to 3-4 teams. He has light feet in relation to his size (his 7.59 Three-Cone and 4.61 20-Yard Shuttle times were in a range for much smaller defensive linemen) and allowing him to chase well in pursuit and make plays in space.

While Hankins has light feet in relation to his size, his game lacks explosiveness in all phases. Once he gets tired he has a tendency? not trust his center of gravity, bending at the waist and leaning into his opponents.

Hankins shows off his balance, running down the line while fighting off a block in pursuit.

?

Intangibles/Character

A junior entry, Hankins has no known character concerns. As noted by Dane Brugler of NFLDraftScout.com, ?[Hankins?] coaches talk positively about his football character.? His motor will likely come into question from looking ?fatigued and worn down throughout games?, but he?s a very big man who was forced to play too many snaps on a mediocre Ohio State defense.

?

System

Hankins played multiple interior defensive line spots in the Buckeyes? 3-4 defense. He lined up at both nose tackle and defensive end in the base defense, as well as the three-technique and one-technique spots in sub packages.

?

Pass Rush ( - )

Hankins? skillset leaves him limited as a pass rusher, and it?s unlikely he?ll ever have much impact there in the NFL. He has slow and undeveloped hands and lacks both a first step and closing speed. Despite having light feet for his size, he?s somewhat linear and deliberate in his movement, making him ineffective on twists and stunts.

?

Against the Run ( + )

When Hankins is fresh, he shows the capability of anchoring the middle of a defense. .

Hankins is not a tremendously dominant or overly physical player at the point of attack. He?s at his most comfortable one-gapping in space and getting upfield, even if it?s not the best overall use of his talent.

He takes good angles in pursuit and his light feet allow him to make plays down the line of scrimmage from the backside. While he doesn?t deal well with compressed spaces or bodies at the point of attack, he?s shown the capability of dominating one-on-ones when he?s fresh.

?

Tackling

As is the case with most big men, Hankins is tackling ability comes down to compressed space. His lack of length sometimes makes it difficult to reach out and grab runners trying to get by at the line of scrimmage. When he feels fresh, he makes a lot of tackles down the line in pursuit.

?

Handfighting ( - )

Hankins can be slow shooting his hands, too often allowing offensive linemen into his chest.

Hankins? hand use is the most concerning part of his game. While he was able to overwhelm some college offensive linemen with size and strength, he too often fails to get inside hand placement on blockers as he winds his punch up slowly and takes bad aiming points. Hankins also has very deliberate hand use after the initial contact, struggling to chain his movements together (or to move his feet while punching simultaneously). Once he gets tired, he has a tendency to lean on blocks.

?

Future Role/Versatility

Hankins? wide-body is going to make him very attractive to 3-4 teams. Since he does not deal with congestion and traffic inside overly well yet, it will likely take time before he can consistently play as a two-gapping nose tackle.

He?ll likely make a quicker impact in a one-gap 3-4 at either defensive end or one-technique. Other than improving the quickness of his punch and chaining up moves to disengage, most of his problems seem to be fatigue-based from playing too many snaps.

It?s unlikely he?ll play much in sub packages or on passing downs and will have a more limited snap count than he did in college which eases concerns some have about his motor.

Some thoughts on self-improvement and on tournaments ? Encased ...

For quite some time, I?ve debated two questions with myself: what should our main goals as HEMAists be, and what is the main use of tournaments? While some people would argue that these questions don?t necessarily have much to do with each other, I would argue that these questions are in fact highly related.

First, what should our goals as HEMAists be? For a long time I couldn?t decide if it should be historical accuracy or martial effectiveness. Yes, the H in HEMA stands for historical, so therefore we need to make sure that what we do is historically accurate, otherwise we are not being honest with ourselves, and we may as well do something other than HEMA. However, the MA is also an important part of HEMA, and my thinking was, what kind of martial artist would aim for anything less than the maximum possible combat efficiency?

I eventually decided that there was no possible conflict there because pursuing historical accuracy would make us more martially effective, and pursuing martial effectiveness would necessitate pursuing historical accuracy. However, at the risk of being controversial, this is not necessarily the case, depending on prior training (and possibly context too, but I don?t have time to delve into the context argument here). Say I have an advanced student with lots of experience in sports fencing and kendo, and who is therefore well used to fighting with his right leg forward primarily. If I force him to fight with a left foot forward Vom Tag as opposed to a right foot forward, then there will probably be a decrease in martial efficiency, because the type of mechanics and footwork that having the left foot leading involve are not well drilled into muscle memory. Or say I?m working with an advanced practitioner who simply doesn?t have the mindset that Liechtenauer advises, someone who is simply not comfortable with rushing forward and continually attacking, then trying to force them to fight in Liechtenauer?s style may not result in more martial effectiveness.

I have come to the realisation that our main priority must be self-improvement. When I say self-improvement I mean it in the broadest sense possible, including aspects like physical fitness, commitment and having a generally positive attitude. Self-improvement already includes both martial effectiveness and historical accuracy within it, because self improvement only happens through challenge. Broadly speaking, if you never challenge yourself, you will never progress. To increase your martial effectiveness, you will need to train hard, putting you outside your comfort zone. This will make you more used to leaving that comfort zone, and possibly expand that comfort zone. If, via training for greater martial effectiveness, someone?s comfort zone can expand from light exercise to vigorous sparring, then they have improved as a person. If someone has dedicated themselves to trying to stick to the methods shown in the historical manual rather than whatever else they want to do, even if it is harder to do so, and even if they temporarily lose some martial effectiveness in the process, then this means they have chosen not to take the easier path, but instead to challenge themselves mentally, and thus have improved as a person. To my mind, the pursuit of both historical accuracy and martial effectiveness are vehicles for self-improvement.

At the end of the day, if you ignore self-improvement, then what actually is the point of pursuing historical accuracy, or martial effectiveness? If you?re not fighting in a particularly historically accurate fashion, why does that matter? Will Liechtenauer roll in his grave with disgust at how you?re not following his teachings perfectly? If I?m not a particularly good martial artist, what does that matter? I?m never going to use a longsword in a real-life context, so if I?m not particularly good at it, why does it matter? My answer is that these aspects only matter in regards to self-improvement. If you are not pursuing historical accuracy and martial effectiveness in your fighting, you are not challenging yourself as much as you could be, and that means you?re not improving as much as you could be. The flip side of this is that why is it important whether or not you can perfectly replicate the 16th play of folio 24v of the MS.28546B (disclaimer: I just made that manual up)? If you?re pursuing historical accuracy for the sake of it, why is that important? I bet if you told anyone who didn?t do HEMA that you had perfectly replicated some particular play, they?d look at you blankly and say, ?So what?? What?s important is not the replication of the play, it?s the dedication and commitment, and possibly athleticism too, that made the replication possible.

I know that I have personally greatly improved through the practice of HEMA. It made me lose fat, gave me a reason and a motivation to build muscle, and increased my co-ordination and reaction speeds. It gave me confidence, so that while before I wasn?t comfortable talking to individuals, now I?m happy teaching large groups of people. It helped me to get used to the idea of dragging myself out of bed at 5 in the morning for a long day of training at one of the AHA?s event, when before I would have stayed in bed. HEMA has spurred me on to study history in a greater depth, rounding out my academic abilities and knowledge. The religious angle tied with KDF, such as the religious references we see in the Zettel, or in Talhoffer?s writings, or the fact that Meyer dedicated his work to a Calvinist, or the theorising that the Federfechter were the Protestant equivalent to the Catholic Marxbruder, led me to study the religious beliefs and divides of the era, which gave me food for thought about my own faith. The moral codes seen in some of the treatises, or in other related writings, like Ramon Lull?s Book of Knighthood and Chivalry (which I wrote about in an earlier blog post you can find here: http://historical-academy.co.uk/blog/2012/11/02/chivalry-according-to-ramon-lull/), made me think about my own moral code. In short, the practice of HEMA has improved many areas of my life, and gave me the motivation to start taking up other activities that I otherwise might not have done which have also improved many areas of my life, and I know that I?m hardly alone in that.

So how does this tie into tournaments? Well, the main goal of HEMA must be self-improvement, and what do I think is the main value of tournaments? Challenge. And what is essential for self-improvement to happen? Challenge.

Other possible answers to the question of what is the main value for tournaments could be finding out who the best fighter there is, their potential as a learning environment, or validation of techniques. I don?t really like any of these answers though. Due to subjectivity, and the fact that judges are only human, tournaments are never going to entirely accurate. While on the whole we hope that if one competitor?s hits aren?t seen, then some of the other competitor?s hits won?t be seen either, so it would balance out, this may not be the case. Sometimes people loose fights they should have won, or vice versa. Even if we train referees to the highest possible standards, judging will still never be entirely accurate. Unless we want to go into the realms of having multiple cameras so that exchanges can get played back in slow motion, and electric sensors of whatever (something which I very much do not want), we can make judging more accurate via training judges, but I don?t think it will ever be accurate enough to say that the winner of any given tournament was definitely the best fighter there, and that?s without taking subjectivity into account.

People sometimes talk about tournaments being a valuable learning environment, and I mostly disagree with this. They may be useful for learning some psychological skills as I?ll discuss below, but I don?t think people are really going to learn much else. Given a combination of tournament stress, and the fact that people are unlikely to be adventurous in a tournament setting, what fighting skills do you expect to learn that could not better be learned in sparring? Personally, I think that if anyone is using a tournament as a learning environment for anything other than learning to deal with tournament stress, they?re not ready for tournaments. As for validation of techniques, if a technique can work in a tournament, then yes, it is validated to an extent, but my point of view is that unless you have already validated a particular technique with a variety of tests and sparring partners, why on earth are you using that technique in a tournament?

For me the greatest value of a tournament is the challenge that it will provide, and the self-improvement that that promotes. The first time I entered a large tournament, you do feel nervous and you do get butterflies in your stomach. Simply entering is physiologically taxing, and the only way to get past that is simply to do it until you get used to it. If we make it a habit of doing things that are intimidating (such as tournaments), then we will no longer find them intimidating (which ties back into some of the things I was saying in one of my earliest blog posts About Being Fearless, According to Dom Duarte: http://historical-academy.co.uk/blog/2011/04/01/about-being-fearless-according-to-dom-duarte/).

If you don?t enter tournaments, are you challenging yourself as much as you could be? It becomes too easy to get used to only fighting a select group of people, and to get comfortable with your level of progress, and to not advance particularly as a result, and participating in a tournament can be a rude awakening that no, you actually do need to progress more.

Even if you don?t need that rude awakening, it is my belief that nothing is equal to competition when it comes to motivating people to improve themselves. Every time I go to a HEMA event, I come back with a new fire and determination to train harder, and then over the next few weeks or months, that slowly starts to die out as I?m not being given the same chance to stay competitive as before. Regular competition therefore is critical to reinforce that motivation to train. Similarly, the same effect happens when you have a tournament upcoming, you often find yourself training more because you know you?re going to get pushed out of your comfort zone at the tournament, and this gives you to motivation to train harder to bring that comfort zone a little closer to the level of the tournament.

For me therefore, the main benefits of a tournament are psychological. This of course means that not everyone will benefit from tournaments in the same way. Some people may have become entirely used to tournament stress, so the main value for them would not be learning to deal with activities outside of their comfort zone anymore. Those types of people may start seeing less benefit from tournaments, or they may be benefitting from the higher levels of intensity that can be present in tournaments, challenging them physically.

It also worth saying that some people simply are not ready for tournaments (unless it is a tightly controlled beginner?s tournament). I am a bit concerned over students being encouraged to participate tournaments very early on in their martial careers. Such students are often simply not ready to be hit hard, as Keith argued last week. They may not have the required experience, training or equipment, yet they are often encouraged to take part in tournaments regardless.

I?ve been talking a bit about strength training recently, and one of the reasons I like it is that is the challenge it provides. In some ways, I?m coming to appreciate that over the muscle and strength gains. Every time I go to the gym I know I will challenge myself, and it?s easy to tell that you?re going to be challenged more than you were last week. If you add more weight on the bar, you are more challenged than you were last week, and this is easily measurable. People who look into strength training will hear a term called progressive overload, which is exactly this, increasing the challenge regularly. Your mind and body adapt to the challenge, leaving you stronger at the end. However, it is important that this is gradual. While it shouldn?t be particularly be challenging for someone with even a relatively small amount of experience in weight training to say squat their own bodyweight (i.e. load up a barbell with your own bodyweight in weight plates, then squat with that on your back), it would be deeply idiotic for someone who?s only been to the gym a few times to try that. That is far too much challenge.

The same is true of tournaments. Challenging yourself too much too early can be incredibly dangerous, both for you and for your opponent. Beyond not being ready to be hit hard, we must also look at the ability to hit hard safely. Beginners often lose that ability when put under stress. I?ve seen much more unsafe hitting coming from beginners who are flustered, scared, or pumped with adrenaline, than I?ve ever seen from a more advanced combatant. Whether they will be a danger to themselves or to others, beginners simply should not be encouraged to join tournaments that will present too much of a challenge for them to safely cope with.

I?m especially concerned about this issue when it comes to female combatants. Some instructors encourage their female beginner students to take part in female tournaments, when they are clearly not ready for it. Perhaps because female tournaments can be seen as being the easy alternative, then female students are sometimes encouraged to join female tournaments more than male students will be encouraged to join open tournaments. The problem with this is females can still hit hard, therefore if a female beginner enters a female tournament, she could be injured because she was not ready for that level of challenge. The fact that it is a women?s tournament is not an excuse to send in unprepared students, especially if there is, as I believe there can be, bias towards encouraging female beginners to take part, when male students might not be encouraged as much to take part in an open tournament.

The other issue relating to female tournaments and to challenge is that female tournaments will, generally, be less challenging than male tournaments. I don?t want to get into a biological argument, so I will leave it at saying that female tournaments are smaller than male tournaments, simply because there are more males in HEMA than females. If a tournament is smaller, it will probably have less rounds, so you will probably fight fewer fights, and fewer other competitors that you have to compete against. Plus, if it is a female tournament, you don?t run the risk of coming up against people like Axel Petterson or Jan Chodkiewicz. I?m not a female, so maybe people will get upset and say that I couldn?t understand, but I?m going to say it anyway, because I think it needs to be said. If you are a female who is ready to take part in an open tournament in terms of training, experience and equipment and you take part in a female tournament instead, you are not challenging yourself as much as you could be, and so are limiting your development.

I have heard arguments that men are on average taller and stronger than females (which is true), and that the Codex Wallerstein explicitly tells us that in a friendly encounter, the stronger fighter has the advantage (in the context of wrestling, not longsword, but it still holds true to some extent), therefore women should fight separately. Tournaments are, to me, not about providing a level playing field. You must fight with people that are bigger and stronger than you, because that will put you out of your comfort zone and develop you more as a human being. If you are shorter, or weaker, then you must challenge yourself to overcome that. Ultimately, it?s not the strongest fighter who has the highest advantage, it is the best swordsman, as Matt Easton said in this thread about the recent Dreynevent final between Arto Fama and the AHA?s very own Keith Farrell:
http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19806

And how do you become the best swordsman? By consistently challenging yourself, not by coming up with excuses. Which is of course easier said than done, but that?s what we should be aiming for.

Which brings me onto my next point. One of the things that annoy me is people complaining about the result. ?Oh, the judge didn?t see my hits, but I should have won?, ?the rules disadvantaged me, and I should have won?, etc. As long as you tried your best, and challenged yourself, that is all anyone, including yourself, should ask. It doesn?t matter if you won or not, or if you should have won or not, because winning is not the goal here. People will probably disagree with me, but to repeat myself, it is not winning that is important, it is the dedication, commitment and athleticism that made winning possible.

All of this is not to say however that tournaments are the be-all-and-end-all of HEMA. They are useful for challenging yourself, but they may not be necessary or suitable for everyone, and focussing too much on tournaments can lead us to neglect other areas. For the upcoming HEMAC Glasgow, Keith and I decided not to run a tournament this year, because last year?s tournament took a lot of time, and didn?t really give all that much benefit. We?re using the time that we would have spent on a tournament on a combination of coached and free sparring, as we feel that combination will provide much greater benefit, and may challenge people more. People will probably get to fight more, and the coached sparring will challenge them to focus on specific areas that they might otherwise ignore (as a sidenote, HEMAC Glasgow will be amazing, and there?s still time to book: http://www.historical-academy.co.uk/hemac-glasgow/index.html).

To sum this all up, what is important in HEMA (and in life really) is self-improvement in a variety of areas. There are multiple ways to pursue self-improvement, such as striving to be more martially effective, or more historically accurate, taking part in tournaments, or sparring. Whatever you do, make sure you are challenging yourself enough, but not too much, and you will grow. I hope that you find some of those thoughts useful, and that the motivational speaker-esque rambling wasn?t too bad.

Power of the Catholic Church slipping in Philippines

As the Vatican commences its Papal Conclave this week in Rome, a test of the Catholic Church?s moral and political influence is underway in the Philippines.

Catholicism has been the predominant religion of the Philippines since the 1500s and it has the third largest number of Catholic citizens in the world, a legacy of the country?s Spanish colonial history. But church critics here say that now is the time to put the nation?s devout Catholic past behind them and move toward a more secular state.

Some analysts point out that just as in other Roman Catholic majority countries in Europe and South America, the Church?s influence in the Philippines is waning. Steven Shirley, author of ?Guided By God: The Legacy of the Catholic Church in Philippine Politics,? says the adoption of the Reproductive Health Law, despite church protest, is proof of that.

?Its a sign that the Philippines is becoming globalized, that the younger generation is opening up to other ideas beyond the church,? says Mr. Shirley. ?It?s a sign that their politics have the ability to go beyond the power of religious groups.?

Since colonial times, the Archdiocese has wielded what some call unjust power in the Philippines. In recent decades, the church has been able to make or break the careers of Filipino presidents: It helped take down Joseph Estrada for his alleged corruption and helped bring Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo into power in 2001.

But activists have been emboldened by the passage of the Reproductive Health Law this past December. The Catholic Church of the Philippines vehemently opposes the legislation because of its provision to provide free contraceptives and family planning services to the poor. During its decade-long fight against the bill, the clergy called for civil unrest and even threatened to excommunicate President Benigno Aquino.

?I think people are finding the weaknesses of the Catholic Church,? says Red Tani, founder of Filipino Free Thinkers, a secular activist group. ?Filipinos have seen the way politicians have been cowed and bullied [by the Church]. People are becoming more critical.?

?They?ve been able to shoot down centuries of Catholic doctrine with just one bill,? Shirley adds. ?This is really a challenge to the church?s power.?

The church may have believed that the nation?s nearly 80 million Catholics were all in tow. But multiple opinion polls, such as those conduced by the survey group Social Weather Station, reveal that the majority of Filipinos no longer agree with the Catholic Church?s stance on contraception. And that was enough to compel Aquino and other lawmakers to challenge the Archdiocese?s authority.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN?

The Catholic Church here has asserted its influence over the years from both pulpits and podiums. Priests were known to tell congregations not to read newspapers and rely on the clergy as their only source for information, according to Shirley. The Church?s school system teaches Catholic values from the elementary to university level. But some analysts say the power of social media has supplanted that of sermons.

?There is now space where voices come out to express views that are not in line with the conventional or traditional views,? says Maria Lourdes Rebullida, who lectures in politics at the University of the Philippines in Quezon City. ?You get it from television [and social] networking, and you have a lot of Western or non-Filipino ideas coming into the country.?

But the Catholic Church of the Philippines has not given up the fight for influence.

Ahead of Congressional elections this spring, clergy have launched a campaign against the lawmakers who voted in favor of the Reproductive Health Law. Recently, a bishop in Bacolod City hung a poster on the side of a cathedral that labels politicians as on Team Life (those who vetoed the bill) or Team Death (those who supported it).

?They are really turning up the heat on these guys, associating the bill with sin and death, against God, unnatural, and immorality, all the words they can throw out,? Shirley says. It?s still possible, he says, that the church might be able to use this occasion to reenergize its base and win back some of its influence that?s been eroded over the years.

AT A CROSSROADS

Both the Archdiocese of Manila as well as the Catholic Bishop?s Conference of the Philippines were unable to provide a representative for interview at the time of writing. But even some devout Catholics say that the church?s doctrinal stances have, in part, turned some of the flock away. And other denominations with alternative doctrine are welcoming them in.

?The church is in a crossroads today, absolutely. The parish priests are losing their members to the charismatic groups. The influence of the priests is waning, the influence of the lay preachers is there,? says Anthony Perez, founder of the Catholic advocacy group Filipinos For Life. He admits that the church just doesn't have the same appeal it used to, and they must find new ways to compete with Protestants and engage those who feel they are slipping away from Catholicism. ?The church has to recognize the change of paradigm.?

Mr. Perez says groups like his are stepping in to help the church win back some of its lost influence. In February, Filipinos For Life and a number of other Catholic groups filed a petition with the Supreme Court to have the Reproductive Health Law declared unconstitutional.

Activist Tani doesn?t think the Church will regain any lost ground in the elections. Filipinos have moved on, he says.

?Even though the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, it does not mean we agree or obey whatever the clergy tells us to do,? he says. ?They [the clergy] has no clout in telling people who to vote for.?

Tani says the success of the Reproductive Health Law has set the stage to take on other Catholic taboos enshrined into Philippine law. His organization has teamed with some legislators to legalize divorce, and he says he sees another battle over morality looming.
