Is Bankruptcy A Possibility Along With Student Education Loans ...

In the event you file for bankruptcy and have student loans, those loans will almost certainly not be discharged. This is simply because in 1998, federal laws on student lending and bankruptcies changed. Since the financial institutions had been losing dollars, student education loans were changed to be non-dischargeable. And when federally guaranteed loans were charged off by means of bankruptcy, the government lost millions of dollars.

Now chapter 7 bankruptcies are issued if the debtor will have undue financial hardship if the loans are not dismissed, but this is tough to prove. Student education loans are typically at the heart of a person?s financial woes and might be decreased by a compassionate judge throughout the bankruptcy procedure.

In other instances where bankruptcy and student education loans are reviewed, if the loans are found to have been sold repeatedly to other lenders and with changing interest rates it?s tough to determine an precise balance, some or the whole loan could be discharged.

Under the provisions of Chapter 13 bankruptcy, a debtor can arrange to have all of their unsecured and secured debt to become part of a repayment plan by way of a court trustee. Provided this can be achieved, it can be a good alternative in many cases, but only a qualified layer can say either way or the other on a case by case basis.

In these instances of bankruptcy where student education loans are included, the individual need to meet particular criteria. It would have to be shown that a person?s wages are such that he or she could afford to pay off their debt on a monthly basis as defined by the court and totally in five years time.

Proving Debtor Has Ability To Pay

If a person has an outstanding debt of $100,000 in bankruptcy court with the ability to pay, then that total is going to be divided by sixty months to generate a payment plan. A debtor may possibly be able to include student education loans in a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy if he or she cannot show earnings of that amount that in addition include cash available for every day living expenses as well.

A Chapter 13 bankruptcy won?t be allowed if the person?s income does allow for expenses and court costs. If all fails and one can?t get student loans included in the bankruptcy, it may possibly at last be possible to make use of bankruptcy for other debts and as a result have more money available to deal with student loans.

Even in the event you file for bankruptcy you?ll most likely still wind up with student education loans taking over a lot of your take home pay. It might be feasible after a bit of time has passed to obtain a lower rate and lower payment loan to assist with the burden of paying off the student education loans.

It?s advisable for any of the individuals, pondering over these lines, in view of its significance and consequences, to consult an experienced lawyer specializing within the field of bankruptcy. A trained professional is the only one qualified to guarantee a happy ending.

I actually run a couple of online websites, 1 around the Types of Bankruptcy plus one more that has for sale Baeras de Hidromasaje.

Paramore, Evanescence Survive To Second Round Of Musical March Madness

Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, Black Keys get bounced. Second-round voting is now under way in all Musical March Madness matchups!
By James Montgomery

After one week of MTV's Musical March Madness, about the only sure thing is that there really is no sure thing. Because with one round in the books, we're bidding adieu to three of our top-seeded bands — the Foo Fighters (bested by James Durbin), Mumford & Sons (shocked by F---ed Up) and the Black Keys (nipped by AWOLNATION) — upsets that prove no one is safe and assure us that, much like the actual NCAA tournament, everyone's bracket is irrevocably broken (shout out to Mizzou and Duke ... thanks, guys!).

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

And though they survived, several other top-tier bands were taken down to the wire. In the West, third-seeded Blink-182 got by #14 Korn by a razor-thin margin, while #5 Linkin Park narrowly avoided an upset at the hands of #12 At the Drive-In. Over in the East, #2 Coldplay outlasted #15 Arctic Monkeys in a tightly contested thriller, and #3 Florence and the Machine needed a late rally to put away #14 Refused. But forget about style points: When it's tournament time, all that matters is winning, and there are still 32 bands remaining in the quest for the MMM championship. And it'll be up to you to guide them there: second-round voting is now under way in our interactive bracket and will run until Sunday, March 25, at midnight ET.

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

So, whose dreams remain intact, and who was left to pick up the pieces? Let's take a look back at all the first-round matchups!

Midwest
Upsets aplenty in the Midwest, as top seed the Black Keys were bounced on a last-second buzzer-beater by #16 AWOLNATION (total margin of victory: 41 votes), #2 Bon Iver and #3 Pearl Jam were upset by #15 Sum 41 and #14 Five Finger Death Punch, respectively, and #4 U2 were shown the door by #13 Modest Mouse (again ... no one is safe). MMM powerhouses My Chemical Romance bucked the trend by blowing out #12 Death Cab for Cutie, though #6 Kid Rock got knocked off by #11 Chevelle in a close contest. Seventh-seeded Metallica outlasted a game Guns N' Roses, but #8 Nickelback were edged out by #9 Rise Against! in a total barn-burner. And after all of that, there's still plenty left to be decided. Here's a look at our second-round matchups:

#9 Rise Against! vs. #16 AWOLNATION
#5 My Chemical Romance vs. #13 Modest Mouse
#11 Chevelle vs. #14 Five Finger Death Punch
#7 Metallica vs. #15 Sum 41

West
More carnage in the West, as the top-seeded Foos got whooped by #16 James Durbin, #2 the Red Hot Chili Peppers went up in smoke against #15 Panic! at the Disco and #4 Maroon 5 got bounced by the late-surging Lana Del Rey. But in an epic battle, #1 Blink-182 was overpowered by #14 Korn (after more than 200,000 votes, they won by less than 800) and defending MMM champs Green Day showed true mettle by mauling #12 the Decemberists. Sixth-seeded Foster the People got bumped by #11 Adam Lambert, and #7 Van Halen were shown the door by #10 No Doubt. And look out for #8 Best Coast, who showed a surprising amount of power by blasting #9 Skrillex. Here's who's still left standing heading into round number two:

#8 Best Coast vs. #16 James Durbin
#5 Green Day vs. #12 Lana Del Rey
#3 Blink-182 vs. #11 Adam Lambert
#13 No Doubt vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco

East
Not nearly as brutal here, as #1 Mumford & Sons got waxed by #16 F---ed Up, while #2 Coldplay used a late rally to edge out #15 Arctic Monkeys, third-seeded Florence and the Machine survived #14 Refused and #4 Muse managed to move on after pasting #13 Gym Class Heroes. In a hotly debated (and borderline illegal) showdown, #5 Arcade Fire were bested by #12 Tokio Hotel (there were 2.1 million votes cast in this one alone) and #6 Fun. fell to the mighty fanbase of #11 Semi Precious Weapons. Not surprisingly, #7 the Shins got smoked by #10 Coheed and Cambria, and #8 Radiohead withstood a late charge from #9 Bruce Springsteen to move on. So after all that carnage, here's a look at our second-round matchups:

#8 Radiohead vs. #16 F---ed Up
#4 Muse vs. #12 Tokio Hotel
#3 Florence and the Machine vs. #11 Semi Precious Weapons
#2 Coldplay vs. #10 Coheed and Cambria

South
Say hello to the only #1 seed still standing: Evanescence, who dispatched of #16 the Alabama Shakes with shocking ease. Second-seeded Paramore throttled a (fundamentally sound) #15 Gotye, while #3 Kings of Leon continued their trend of MMM sucktitude by getting blasted by #14 Phoenix. Fourth seed Jack White did his part by beating back #13 Shinedown, and #5 Linkin Park survived #13 At the Drive-In. The always-dangerous 30 Seconds to Mars thumped #11 Sleigh Bells, but #7 Cage the Elephant fell victim to #10 Ke$ha and her epically toned pelvic muscles. And in a battle true to their late-rising fanbases,#9 Dave Matthews Band rode one final surge of voting to overcome #9 My Morning Jacket. Don't get too excited just yet, DMB fans, because Evanescence is next. Here's a look at our round-two tilts in the South:

#1 Evanescence vs. #9 Dave Matthews Band
#4 Jack White vs. #13 At the Drive-In
#6 30 Seconds to Mars vs. #14 Phoenix
#2 Paramore vs. #10 Ke$ha

So, with one week in the books, 32 teams remain alive. But just who will reign supreme? Well, that's all up to you: Voting is now live in all second-round matchups ... so get cracking.

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness Tournament heads to the second round beginning Monday (March 19). Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

D.C. Man Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison for Wire Fraud, ID Theft ...

A Washington man convicted of using more than $225,000 in counterfeit business checks to host lavish parties was sentenced Friday to 96 months in prison today by a federal district judge in Virginia.

Austin Davidson, 32, who pleaded guilty in December to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, was also ordered to pay $227,281 in restitution to victims of a scheme that prosecuting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Neil MacBride likened to that of Frank Abagnale Jr., whose 1960s check forgeries became the focus of Hollywood movie Catch Me If You Can.

?Austin Davidson wanted to live the high life ? but he didn?t want to pay for it,? MacBride wrote in a statement. ?But each scam required that he get away in the nick of time, and the Secret Service ultimately caught up with him."

With the help of a computer and printer, Davidson would produce checks bearing the names of well-known financial companies like JP Morgan Chase and The Carlyle Group. Then, assuming the identity of a company employee, he would use these checks to rent upscale homes, purchasing catered food and limousine service for parties he hosted.

While living in the rented homes, Davidson also occasionally stole property of the owners, including personal checks that were then used to buy, among other things, a Mercedes Benz.

According to a Justice Department press release, at the time he was caught, Davidson had a party planned for the night following his arrest in conjunction with a championship boxing match in D.C.

At his sentencing, United States District Judge Liam O?Grady also considered Davidson's history of check fraud and identity theft, crimes he was first convicted of when he was 17 years old.

Sport Recreation and Football | opendoorbc.net

Sport Recreation and Football

When you think about sports and having fun you do not always think about recreation or even exercise. The only thing that you are thinking about is getting together with your friends and having a great time for a few hours. So if you were to put sport recreation and football together than you would realize that you have a great combination. Not only are you having fun but you are also getting to play a sport that you love and you are having a great time with your family and or friends. It is also wonderful exercise.

We all do many different things for recreation so that we can get a break from our everyday lives and the hum drum of the things that we do each and every day. Each person has their own thing that they like to do in order to have fun. For guys they usually seem to turn to some sort of sport and when they have sport recreation and football combined not only are they getting a chance to forget about the day but they are also getting a chance to have a little bonding time with their friends.

Although playing football is a lot of fun it is also a very physical sport and therefore the player takes a chance of getting hurt each time that they play.

Although this is not generally a problem when it comes to sport recreation and football since it is just for fun, things can occasionally get out of hand. It is still important to make sure that you wear the right protective gear so that you take less of a chance and avoid injury. This is especially important for younger kids so that the parents know they are doing everything that they can.

Next to baseball, this seems to be one of the sports that men turn to without question. But whether you realize it or not there are many women that actually enjoy the game as well.

So when you see a female enjoying sport recreation and football as well, do not be surprised if she seems as though she can play as good as some of the guys. You may find that they can give you a run for your money and shock you at just how good they really are. It could make for a really interesting game.

Sports can be a great way to get some exercise, get out of the house for a little while and spend some time with your friends. When you put all of that together you are going to get sport recreation and football that is not only going to provide you with a great time but also a way to stay fit or get fit. This is time that you can take advantage of to get your body in shape and not have to think about it as if you were in the gym. This alone is a great motivation for many guys to get out there and have fun.

Rutgers webcam spying trial is heading to jury

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? After nearly two weeks of testimony, the case that kick-started national conversations about gay youths and Internet privacy is going to a jury that must decide whether Dharun Ravi is a criminal or just a young man who was confused by seeing two men kiss.

Ravi, now 20, is accused of viewing a few seconds of his roommate's encounter with another man in their dorm room at Rutgers University and telling people about it in text messages, tweets and in person. He could face years in prison if convicted of charges including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, a hate crime.

Lawyers gave their summations Tuesday in the case, which has gotten enormous attention since the events of September 2010, when the roommate, Tyler Clementi, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge.

The trial, which included testimony from about 30 witnesses over 12 days in addition to the closing arguments, focused on a few days in the dorm where Ravi and Clementi, both 18-year-olds from well-off New Jersey suburbs, were randomly assigned to be roommates for their first year at Rutgers.

Defense attorney Steven Altman told jurors that Ravi was surprised to turn on his webcam and see his roommate in an intimate situation with another man. He emphasized that there was no recording, no broadcast and no YouTube video of the Sept. 19, 2010, encounter.

And he said Ravi was not acting out of hatred of his roommate or gays in general when he saw the image from his webcam on the computer of another student.

"If there's hate in Dharun's heart, if there's ugliness in Dharun's heart, where's there some information and some evidence to support it?" Altman asked jurors.

Ravi tweeted and talked about what he saw, but Altman said he was only doing so because he was young, had never before seen men kissing and did not know what to do. He'd turned on the webcam in the first place, Altman said, because he was worried about what was happening in his room after seeing Clementi's guest, whom Ravi described as "older" and "sketchy."

His client, Altman said, was concerned about whether the stranger might take the iPad he'd left in the room.

Julia McClure, a prosecutor for Middlesex County, reminded jurors of testimony from some of Ravi's high school friends that even before Ravi moved into the dorm, he was concerned about having a gay roommate.

"He was so shocked that within about four minutes, he sent out a tweet, because he was seeking advice?" McClure asked. And, she said, there was evidence that he then told other students about what he'd seen and invited them to a friend's room where they could see for themselves.

The challenge for jurors could be deciding whether the laws apply to what Ravi is alleged to have done.

He faces 15 charges. Four are invasion of privacy and attempted invasion of privacy charges, where the required proof is that he saw or disseminated images ? or attempted to ? of private parts or sex acts, or a situation where someone might reasonably expect to see them.

Four charges allege bias intimidation. Ravi can be convicted of intimidation if he's also found guilty of an underlying invasion-of-privacy charge. Two of those charges are second-degree crimes punishable by up to 10 years in prison ? the most significant penalties he faces if convicted.

Seven charges accuse him of trying to cover his tracks. Among the allegations: that he deleted and changed Twitter postings and text messages and told another witness what to say.

Clementi's death was one in a string of suicides by young gays around the country in September 2010 and became probably the best known. President Barack Obama commented on it in an online video, as did talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

New Jersey lawmakers hastened passage of an anti-bullying law because of the case, and Rutgers changed housing policies to allow opposite-sex roommates in an effort to make a more comfortable environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Nokia's extreme dieting continues as it kills off Nokia Money

Nokia kills Indian mobile payments service as it pulls every ladder up
If you thought Nokia had finished its program of slimming down, think again. The axe is being wielded on Nokia Money as the company seeks to reinvent itself as a lean'n'mean mobile player. The mobile payments and cash management service was launched in India late last year, but both complex financial regulations and the fact it's outside of Nokia's core business prompted its early closure. Instead, it'll concentrate its efforts on its smartphones designed for emerging markets like the Asha: with the aim of connecting the "next billion" people to the internet.

States finding tough climate for gas tax proposals

(AP) ? As if gas prices weren't high enough, several states across the U.S. are looking to raise fuel taxes they say are needed to pay for roads and bridges that are outdated, congested and in some cases, dangerous.

Maryland's governor is proposing a phased-in 6 percent sales tax by 2 percent a year, which would raise about $613 million annually when fully implemented. Iowa is considering raising its current 21-cent-per-gallon tax by either 8 cents or 10 cents.

Such proposals were hard to even contemplate during the recession and its immediate aftermath. Now, states forced to grapple with the problem are running into record-high gas prices for this time of year and lingering effects of the recession.

In Maryland, lawmakers are questioning whether the time is right for such an increase, which is never popular even in good fiscal times.

"They understand that it's needed," Delegate Tawanna Gaines, a Democrat, said when asked about the proposal last month, on a day when the national average price of gasoline hit $3.65 a gallon. The average price of gas on Monday pushed toward $3.80 a gallon. "They get that, but they basically believe that you can't get blood out of a turnip. It's going to be a very, very tough sell."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, is quick to point out that the state hasn't raised its gas tax since 1992 ? and the flat tax doesn't buy nearly as much as it once did. But some lawmakers say they are getting significant pushback from residents who are calling their offices to express opposition at a time when Maryland, like most other states, is still trying to bounce back from the recession.

O'Malley's plan would delay a 2 percent annual increase if gas prices rise by more than 15 percent in a fiscal year. Lawmakers also say Maryland's $1.1 billion deficit is creating another obstacle, because his challenging budget plan includes a variety of other tax increases that legislators will be considering.

Other states also are looking at increasing revenue streams for transportation projects after years of neglect.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, is calling on lawmakers in his state to raise $1.4 billion more for transportation needs. In Arkansas, voters may be asked to consider raising two taxes to help pay for the state's roads. In Iowa, a commission named by Republican Gov. Terry Branstad recommended late last year that the fuel tax be increased.

In Michigan, state lawmakers in both parties are considering higher fuel-related taxes and vehicle registration fees to raise more than $1 billion of the $1.4 billion the governor is seeking. Rep. Rick Olson, a Republican who supports the revenue increases, contends it's a matter of trying to avoid larger expenses later, if maintenance is deferred.

"It's certainly going to be difficult, and no one argues that we need $1.4 billion," Olson said. "The longer we wait, the more it is going to cost us."

In both Maryland and Michigan, business groups have been supportive of raising revenue for transportation.

Rich Studley, president of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, said Michigan's transportation system is crucial to three top industries in the state, including manufacturing, agribusiness and tourism.

"It's really, from a Chamber of Commerce perspective, all about jobs and the economy," Studley said.

Kathy Snyder, Maryland's Chamber of Commerce president, also is backing a revenue increase in Maryland. However, she said the chamber would rather phase in a 10-cent increase to the state's flat tax, instead of O'Malley's phase-in of a sales tax.

"Transportation funding is one of the top priorities of the Maryland chamber again this year," Snyder said. "Like many states, we don't have enough funding to build any road, bridge, highway or transit project either from state funds or federal funds."

An Arkansas constitutional amendment that lawmakers have placed on the November ballot will ask voters to approve a temporary, half-cent sales tax to pay for the state's highways. The sales-tax measure is part of a highway plan calling for an increase in the state's diesel tax, which the Legislature approved last year. That plan was scaled back when the state's trucking lobby withdrew its support and said voters would not approve a tax hike. Instead, voters approved extending a $575 million highway bond program in November.

A second proposal in Arkansas would raise the state's severance tax on natural gas to pay for highways. A former natural-gas executive has until July 6 to submit more than 62,000 signatures to place his proposal on the November ballot. It would increase the severance tax to 7 percent. Wells are now taxed at between 1.25 percent and 5 percent of the value of the gas being taken from the land.

In Iowa, a commission recommended late last year that the fuel tax be increased by 8 cents to 10 cents per gallon. Iowa has gone even longer than Maryland in increasing its current 21cents-per-gallon tax, which was last raised in 1989. Branstad reacted by saying there was no need to increase the tax this year, and instead told state transportation officials to identify $50 million in savings that could be diverted to road projects. They have done so.

Some Iowa lawmakers think that's inadequate, however, and committees in both the House and Senate are debating a fuel-tax increase.

Branstad continues to say he's focused on finding efficiency but refuses to issue a veto threat that would halt debate immediately. Republicans run the House and top leaders there have the power to block debate, but they have yet to do so. Democrats run the state's Senate, and they say the issue will proceed only if it gets broad support from Republicans.

Interest groups pushing the issue say there are enough votes to approve the increase, with the only remaining question being if an adequate level of Republican support can be found to avoid the issue being used against Democrats in November. All sides say they will need some signal from Branstad that he will approve the measure, even if it only comes privately.

In Maryland, O'Malley focused much of his State of the State speech on the need to make tough budget choice in order to find money that would help create construction jobs and maintain transportation infrastructure crucial to economic development in the suburbs of the nation's capital, which has some of the worst traffic in the nation.

"To create jobs, a modern economy requires modern investments," O'Malley said in the Feb. 1 speech. "Investments by all of us, for all of us."

O'Malley's chief of staff, Matthew Gallagher, has been meeting with lawmakers to underscore the gas tax measure's "breaking mechanism," which would defer any increase in fiscal years when the price of gas increases by more than 15 percent. Gallagher said the administration anticipated concern about price volatility and included the slowdown to allay worries.

"I think there is an awareness about the significant need for funding and an awareness that nothing has happened on this in 20 years," Gallagher said.

Studley, who is optimistic there will be a window of opportunity to pass legislation in Michigan this year, noted the challenges of previous years, when lawmakers have told him to come back with the proposal when it's not an election year or when gas prices are not high.

"Sometimes, working on this issue is kind of like going into that friendly neighborhood tavern, where everybody knows your name and the sign behind the bar says 'Free beer tomorrow,' which sounds good, but tomorrow never comes," Studley said.

Birds of Prey in the Douro | Graham's Port

A young eagle pauses at Graham's Quinta da Vila Velha

Graham?s and all of the Symington Family Estates? quintas in the Douro ? some 944 hectares (2,300 acres) ? are on average only about 50% planted with vineyards, with the rest of the land being a mixture of olive or citrus groves and natural vegetation.? This creates an richly varied natural habitat for wildlife, and over the years the Symington family have observed a gradual increase in birds of prey in the Douro ? a sure sign that other birds and animals in the food chain are ?thriving and increasing.

So it was with some interest that Paul Symington read an article in the local Douro newspaper about a Birds of Prey recovery unit at the University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in Vila Real, and asked Ant?nio Filipe, SFE?s general manager, to learn more about the program for us.? What he learned so impressed the family that last week they visited UTAD to tour the facility and to make a donation on behalf of SFE to help sustain the extraordinary work of the program. ?The Dean of UTAD, Prof Carlos Alberto Sequeira, welcomed them, and introduced ?his colleagues who are directly involved with the Birds of Prey program.

L to R: Ant?nio Filipe, Paul Symington, Dr. Filipe Silva, Dr. Roberto Sargo

UTAD has an extensive program of agrarian sciences, including a school of Veterinary Sciences, headed up by Dr. Filipe Silva, and a veterinary hospital which is open to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.? The staff receive and treat up to 4,500 animals per year, including domestic and exotic pets, horses, farm animals, and any injured wild animals which people have found.? The hospital is well designed with extensive facilities for the reception, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation of all these different kinds of animals.

The Centro de Recep??o, Acolhimento e Tratamento de Animais Selvagens (The Centre for Reception, Refuge and Treatment of Wild Animals) (CRATAS) is an additional facility which includes areas specifically designed for the rehabilitation of birds of prey.? The Centre receives an average of 200 wounded birds each year from right across the Tr?s os Montes region.

Scops Owls

Eagle Owl

Peregrine Falcons

Dr. Roberto Sargo, head of CRATAS, lead the tour through the facilities, explaining the program and showing the family and Ant?nio some of the current residents, including a trio of Mochos de Orelhas (Scops Owls) the symbol of SFE?s Altano table wines, two magnificent Eagle Owls and a group of Peregrine Falcons, the fastest animal on earth, which can reach speeds over 325 km/h (202 miles per hour) as it dives to hunt.? With all the time spent in the Douro, the family are all familiar with many of these birds ? and have been known to forget the grapes for a minute to point out an eagle or falcon overhead whilst leading visitors through Quinta dos Malvedos during harvest.

Most of the birds brought in to the centre have been shot, though some have been electrocuted by high tension cables or hit by cars.? After any necessary surgery has been performed in a dedicated facility, the birds are housed in a series of spaces of differing sizes, according to their capacity for flight: as the birds regain strength and it is safe for them to begin to fly again, they are moved to progressively taller and longer tunnels with more space to practice, the last being 25 metres in length.? In addition, their diet is gradually modified so that in the final stages of recovery they are hunting again within the tunnel, as they would in the wild.? The goal is always to return to the wild all birds that can survive again, and their recent release of a black vulture was featured on the news here in Portugal.

We are very pleased and proud to support the work of UTAD and the CRATAS program and the preservation of the birds of prey in the Douro region.

Graham's has an unmatched reputation as a producer of the finest Port wines.

Taking sustainable restaurants to a whole new level

It started with local coffee shops growing humble herb gardens and using seasonal produce. The dedicated moved onto worm farms, organic vegetables, and waste water recycling. Now eco-savvy restaurants are actively finding new, innovative ways to contribute to the sustainable hospitality movement.

Sustainable restaurants in the USA

North American restaurants and chains are supporting other industries (and creating new businesses) with their ?green? ideas. For example, some restaurants collect wine corks for recycling into soles for shoes.sustainable restaurant Others reclaim wood from a variety of sources (renovations, old barns, etc.) and rework it into tables, chairs and restaurant furniture. And have you heard about Starbucks? sustainable practices?

Starbucks have all sorts of sustainable tricks up their sleeve. One of their recent projects was recycling shipping containers. They experimented with using shipping containers to make a ?drive-through coffee house?.

Green initiatives create jobs, businesses and industries

The recovery/recycling processes are creating new businesses. One example is the recovery and recycling of wood. Wood salvage ?used to be two guys in a pick-up recovering barn scraps?, according to Bob Falk, president of the Building Materials Reuse Association. Now it?s much bigger business as reclaimed wood is becoming a valuable commodity.

sustainable restaurant in USAStarbucks have used recycled wood and furniture in various stores and they recycle at least one regularly-used item, for example, plastic milk jugs. They also provide used coffee grounds to customers as fertiliser for their gardens. Another great initiative is encouraging people to bring their own reusable travel mug or beverage receptacle for their coffee.

In addition to all of these, Starbucks looks at their responsibility on an ethical, local and global scale, and also monitors their progress towards sustainability goals.

Sustainable restaurants in South Africa

South African restaurants are also taking the sustainable movement seriously and exploring a variety of eco-friendly endeavours ranging from the now-popular organic herb and veggie garden, to unusual recycling projects and strong support of the Biodiversity Wine Initiative (BWI). Many restaurants, cafe?s and tea rooms around the country are doing their bit for the environment (and future generations). Here are a few that are leading the sustainable charge?

The Corner Cafe? (Durban)

sustainable restaurant in south africaThe Corner Cafe? is run by folks of character! This is how they explain their ethos:

?We are an eco-restaurant, we try to conduct business in a manner that least disrupts the environment. Beverages are ordered in glass bottles, no plastic or tin. We do not stock plastic straws and serviettes are linen not paper. All washing and cleaning is done with dolphin friendly detergents. Excess kitchen scraps are fed into our wormery and turned into worm tea which in turns feeds our garden from which we grow our herbs. We do not use microwaves nor chip fryers. We do not use bathroom aerosols but instead use flower essential oils, or I cut up handfulls of lemon grass and leave it on the floor in the toilets and it smells so kiff.

With saying this we are not tree hugging, tie dye wearing hippies, we are just ordinary people trying to save the planet ?one cappuccino at a time?. And try stay off too much meat?if you have to eat meat try Hope Meats, their animals have had a happy life and an unaware death.?

Their meat is also hormone and antibiotic-free, and free range. The Corner Cafe? uses yoghurt made in the Midlands by hand, recycles 90% of its waste and its grey water system recycles basin and washing machine water. Beverages are sourced from local winemakers and micro-brewers and the cafe? has its own water produced in Morningside using eco-friendly processes.

Eight Restaurant, Spier (Stellenbosch)

Have you heard of Spier?s restaurant, Eight? It?s the cre?me de la cre?me of 5 star ethical indulgence. Let?s start with the fresh produce. The fresh produce used in the restaurant is grown on Spier?s biodynamic farm. If the kitchen needs ingredients unavailable on the farm, local suppliers are thoroughly researched in order to obtain organic and natural produce. Suppliers are vetted by organic certification, fair trade accreditation and labour policies. The only meat served in the restaurant is meat reared on the farm.

The menu changes every day depending on what fresh ingredients are available and no carbonated drinks are served due to the restaurant?s health-and-whole-food emphasis. Drinks include fresh iced teas, squeezed juices, and organic wines.

In the bathrooms you?ll find bio-degradable soaps, recycled paper and ethical cleaning products. The restaurant furniture is recycled from ?waste? wood, and lighting is made from recycled bottles, lined with low voltage LED lights.

Spier also recycles 100% of its waste water, which is used for irrigation. The farm has lowered water usage to 2.6l per 1l of wine ? conventional use is up to 5.6l for the same output.

Visit Gregg?s Platter for more fantastic ethical restaurants in the Western Cape.

South African restaurants and the Biodiversity Wine Initiative

If you?re a regular ?winer-and-diner?, you may have noticed BWI wines populating wine lists across South Africa. In fact, some eco-conscious restaurants serve only BWI wines.

The BWI (Biodiversity Wine Initiative) is a collaboration between the wine industry and the conservation sector. Its purpose is to protect natural fynbos habitats, some of which are highly endangered. Farmers commit to setting aside portions of their farms to preserve (often very specific) natural fauna and flora.

The initiative also focuses on managing water, fire prevention, alien invasive plant species and guarding against pollution and destruction of river and wetland systems. The partnership between farmers and BWI is doing exceptional work and has numerous stories of successful rehabilitation.

SA restaurants and sustainable seafood

Another excellent SA organisation is SASSI, the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative. In general, the fishing industry can be a wasteful one. Countless sea creatures and undesirable fish are caught as a result of fishing practices and are thrown back into the ocean (often dead).

Marine species are increasingly becoming endangered due to overfishing and poaching, and the future of marine life is looking bleak. Seafood is a limited resource that needs to be protected. SASSI has three objectives:sustainable seafood

  1. Promote voluntary compliance of the law through education and awareness
  2. Shift consumer demand away from over-exploited species to more sustainable options
  3. Create awareness around marine conservation issues

The organisation also has also established three seafood lists on ?traffic light? basis:

  • Green ? safe to eat
  • Orange ? rather don?t eat
  • Red ? definitely don?t eat!

Seafood on the green list is currently safe to eat because there are sufficient sustainable stocks and fishing practices. Seafood on the orange list is in trouble and seafood, and the red list is in danger.

South Africans saving the earth

As with the BWI wines, many SA restaurants serve only seafood on the SASSI green list.

It?s wonderful to see South African restaurants working towards sustainability in so many different ways. Are there any sustainable restaurants in your area? Let us know in the comments!

PFT: O'Brien says Welker play wasn't a drop

Brent Grimes, Robert MeachemAP

Though Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson seems to believe that the franchise tag represents a badge of honor, there?s little honor in being prevented from becoming a free agent.

Sure, the franchise tag also constitutes a one-year offer for employment at a salary that the player wouldn?t be offered in any other line of work.? But it?s far lower than what the player would receive if the player were able to sign a multi-year contract with significant guaranteed money.

Without significant guaranteed money, the risk of serious injury remains on the player.

And so most players will be upset by the maneuver.? Players like Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes will decline to accept the offer.

?We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,? Grimes? agent, Ben Dogra, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday.? ?We hope to be able to continue to discuss [through] all the issues at the appropriate time.?

The use of the phrase ?no plans . . . at this time? allows Grimes to change his mind later.? But the fact that he?s not under contract also allows him and every other franchise player to withhold services indefinitely.? He can boycott the offseason program, training camp, and the preseason, and he can show up only days before the start of the regular season, sign the tender, and receive the full amount, fully guaranteed.

He also can stay away until Week 10 of the regular season, sign the tender then, finish the year, and hit the market in 2013 ? unless the team is willing to offer 120 percent of his 2012 salary in order to use the franchise tag a second time.

The only risk a player takes by not signing the franchise tender is that the team can rescind it at any time, making the player an unrestricted free agent.

While on one hand that gives the player what he wanted in the first place, on the other hand it can put the player on the market well after teams have blown their budgets and/or determined their depth charts.? Jackson?s intention to sign the tender in Philly surely was influenced in part by the fact that the Eagles twice before have rescinded the franchise tender.

The Falcons likely won?t do that with Grimes.? In an increasingly pass-happy league, they need him.? Especially since Dunta Robinson has yet to play at the level his own multi-year, free-agent contract would contemplate.

Grimes is surely holding out hope that, by holding out, the Falcons will give him the kind of multi-year deal that Grimes would have gotten if he hadn?t been blocked from becoming an unrestricted free agents.

RECAP: Lindsay Lohan Returns to 'SNL'

Lindsay Lohan poked fun at herself with some extra help from Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon in a star-studded episode of Saturday Night Live.

Lindsay negotiated Jimmy Fallon's guest appearance in front of a live studio audience late Thursday night as Jimmy interviewed her on an episode of his talk show. A smart move on Lindsay's part as the former SNL cast member brought energy and laughs at the top of the show.

Mad Men star Jon Hamm also appeared early on as a part of a sketch that suggested he was on standby as Lindsay's understudy -- the joke being that the show did not trust Lindsay to follow through with her hosting duties.

But follow through she did, and it didn't take long for the 25-year-old to get her sea legs back. In a hilarious sketch called The Real Housewives of Disney, Lindsay played Rapunzel -- a wild child whose aberrations resembled those of LiLo's own life.

Kaley Cuoco and Josh Resnik: It's Over!

Kaley Cuoco's engagement has come to an end, as the CBS star has confirmed that she is no longer set to marry boyfriend/addiction specialist Josh Resnik.

What happened? The actress is keeping that information to herself, but confirmed to Entertainment Tonight this week that she was no longer altar-bound.

The subject came up when The Big Bang Theory star was asked if she took inspiration from the recent wedding of costar Kunal Nayyar. Her response:

"I'm not engaged anymore, so no. But in general, yes. For my future wedding, yes!"

That clears that up. As it were, the 26-year-old actress had never publicly declared any wedding date and only announced her engagement to Resnik last October.

It's unclear when the engagement was called off, but her show is still going strong. Just follow this link for a virtual library of The Big Bang Theory quotes!

DeMarco: No more '1960s baseball' for Giants

Bochy is hoping new guys Pagan and Cabrera can revitalize team's terrible offense

Image: Bruce BochyAP

"We're faster. That's going to help us create runs a little easier," Giants manager Bruce Bochy says.

updated 4:30 p.m. ET March 1, 2012

Tony DeMarco

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The question elicited a chuckle from Giants general manager Brian Sabean: How many more runs do the Giants need to score in 2012 than the National-League-worst 570 they managed in their failed 2011 World Series-title defense?

"It's a big number,'' Sabean said. "A lot more.''

And therein lies the key to a return to the postseason for the Giants. Can their offense get back to at least middle-of-the-pack production and support an elite pitching staff enough to leapfrog the Arizona Diamondbacks in the always-fluid NL West?

A quick review of the basic numbers: On their way to a 92-70 regular-season in 2010, the Giants scored 697 runs ? only ninth-most in the NL, but 127 more than they scored in 2011.

Meanwhile, the pitching staff was almost identically excellent in both seasons ? 583 runs allowed in 2010 and 578 last season ? both second-best in the NL.

That left the Giants with run differentials of +114 in 2010 and -8 last season, which makes their 86-76 finish in 2011 even more remarkable. They finished 10 games above .500 while being outscored by eight runs.

"We won 86 games scoring 570 runs; that's 1960s baseball,'' Sabean said.

So Sabean knew an off-season, pitching-for-hitting makeover had to occur. He couldn't dump inconsistent and arbitration-eligible Jonathan Sanchez fast enough, sending him to Kansas City for Melky Cabrera less than a week after the World Series ended.

"Between the lack of strike throwing and the way (Sanchez) got banged up, we weren't willing to pay him around $6 million a year,'' Sabean said. "He had run his course here. We had legit interest in Cabrera. We were fortunate to get a player like that in return.''

Setup man Ramon Ramirez ? part of a still-very-deep bullpen ? was sent to the Mets along with Andres Torres for Angel Pagan, and two-thirds of the Giants' outfield changed. With a projected left-to-right arrangement of Cabrera, Pagan and Nate Schierholz, there is far more speed and athleticism ? if not power.

"We think we're more athletic,'' said manager Bruce Bochy, whose spring workouts are emphasizing baserunning. "We're faster. That's going to help us create runs a little easier.''

The current plan is for Pagan to lead off, proably followed by Cabrera ? and with 32 and 20 steals respectively last season, they would have been the top two on a Giants roster that combined for only 85 stolen bases. Both players also are a year away from free agency, so Sabean is counting on motivated, focused seasons from them.

"I've been through those types of years where you lose a guy or two, but last year, we didn't really have a top of order,'' Sabean said. "Torres crashed and burned. We lost (Freddy) Sanchez as No. 2 hitter, and then Buster (Posey to a season-ending leg injury). And (Aubrey) Huff didn't have the year we expected.

"We were scrambling. Obviously, we had guys overexposed because they weren't used to being in the spots that we asked them to hit in.''

There is no bigger difference maker for the Giants than Posey, of course, and the early returns are encouraging. He's ahead of schedule in his rehab from the nasty broken lower leg, and barring a setback is expected to be ready by Opening Day ? although he will get occasional starts at first base as a wear-and-tear precaution.

Freddy Sanchez's healthy return could drop Cabrera to the No. 3 spot, and Brandon Belt will get an opportunity to take away playing time from Huff, who needs a fast start to avoid a permanent loss of playing time after a precipitous falloff in 2011.

But Sanchez (shoulder) is behind the other position players at this point, just taking ground balls and playing catch, so Bochy will have the spring to experiment with several different lineup configurations.

And after two very sub-par team performances with runners in scoring position ? yes, the Giants were last in the NL in that category in 2011 ? Bochy figures things can't get any worse.

"We've had two rough years in a row hitting with runners in scoring position; you don't see that happening again,'' Bochy said. "We're not as bad as those numbers were.

"Just getting Buster and Freddy back, the offense will be more consistent. It needs to be, it has to be for us to have a good year.''
