LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron warned on Thursday that speculation about the identity of an unidentified member of his ruling Conservative party accused of sexually abusing children could turn into a witch-hunt against gay people.

Cameron, who leads a troubled two-party coalition, ordered an investigation this week after a victim of child sexual abuse in Wales said a prominent Conservative political figure had abused him during the 1970s.

The claims, which follow the unmasking of late BBC star presenter Jimmy Savile as one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, have stoked concern that a powerful pedophile ring may have operated in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s.

"I have heard all sorts of names bandied around and what then tends to happen is of course that everyone then sits around and speculates about people, some of whom are alive, some of whom are dead," Cameron said during an ITV television interview.

"It is very important that anyone who has got any information about any pedophile no matter how high up in the country go to the police," he said.

Britain's interior minister warned lawmakers this week that if they named suspected child abusers in parliament they risked jeopardizing future trials.

MPs benefit from "parliamentary privilege" - meaning they can speak inside parliament freely without fear of legal action on a host of legally sensitive issues that might otherwise attract lawsuits.

Reports of child abuse have provoked fevered speculation on the Internet about the identity of the Conservative figure from the era of Margaret Thatcher, prime minister from 1979 to 1990.

When the ITV interviewer passed Cameron a piece of paper with the names of people identified on the Internet as being alleged child abusers, Cameron said:

"There is a danger if we are not careful that this could turn into a sort of witch-hunt particularly against people who are gay."

"I am worried about the sort of thing you are doing right now - giving me a list of names you have taken off the Internet," Cameron said.

The BBC aired a program last week in which Steven Messham, one of hundreds of victims of sexual abuse at children's care homes in Wales over two decades, said he had been sexually abused by a prominent Conservative political figure.

However, the BBC reporter said he could not name the figure because there was "simply not enough evidence to name names".

NY man who lost leg in crucifix mishap sues church

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? David Jimenez was so elated over his wife's recovery from cancer that he offered to clean the large crucifix outside the Hudson Valley church where he spent many hours praying for her to beat the disease. On Memorial Day 2010, he was scrubbing grime off the cross when the 600-pound marble statuary toppled over, crushing his right leg.

The then-43-year-old immigrant from Mexico was flown to Westchester Medical Center, where doctors had to amputate his injured leg. He's suing the Roman Catholic church where he was hurt, and early next year his $3 million lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial.

"He attributed her recovery to his devotion to the cross and Christ hearing his prayers," Jimenez's lawyer, Kevin Kitson of White Plains, told The Associated Press.

Kitson said he filed the lawsuit in March 2011 after the church denied it was liable for the accident that resulted in six-figure medical bills for Jimenez. The bills were paid by charitable foundations, Kitson said.

The lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in state Supreme Court in Orange County in January, Kitson said.

The attorney described David and Delia Jimenez as devout Catholics who immigrated to the United States from Mexico nearly 20 years ago. They have three children, ages 3, 13 and 17, Kitson said.

During delivery jobs for a bakery and a pizzeria, David would pull into the parking lot at St. Patrick's Church in the city of Newburgh to pray before the outdoor crucifix for his wife, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. When she was deemed cancer-free two years later, the grateful David received permission from church officials to remove trash from the area around the crucifix, and to clean the crucifix itself, Kitson said.

On May 30, 2010, Jimenez was standing on the crucifix's base, using rags and soapy water to clean Christ's face. While holding onto the cross beam for balance, the whole crucifix snapped off at its base, sending Jimenez crashing to the ground, Kitson said. Pieces of the crucifix broke off, but the bulk of it landed on Jimenez's right leg, crushing it.

Kitson said only a single screw was holding the heavy crucifix to its base.

"There was no anchoring system, just that one screw," he said.

The church raised more than $7,000 for Jimenez and his family, but Kitson said his client has been unable to work since the accident.

Frank Raia of Rikin Radler, the New York law firm representing the church, wouldn't discuss specifics of the case. The church is part of the Archdiocese of New York, which isn't named as a defendant in the lawsuit, Raia said.

"Although the archdiocese and St. Patrick's Church recognize and understand this was a terrible accident and they have empathy for Mr. Jimenez and his family, it's our position that of the diocese and St. Patrick's Church are not liable for the accident."

There was no immediate response Wednesday from Kitson's law firm to a request for an interview with Jimenez.

Mac Expected to Switch to iOS Hardware Architecture Soon(-ish ...

Bloomberg is reporting today that Apple is working toward making Intel processor chips a thing of the past for all of its products, including Mac-related computers. Instead, the iPad maker plans to integrate its own ARM processor technology as soon as it is fast enough to power the larger electronic devices.

Apple currently uses ARM-based CPUs in the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch for processor technology and Intel processors in its personal computers, including the iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Although the change over is not in the foreseeable future, Bloomberg is reporting that some engineers have said that the move toward ARM-based technology is ?inevitable as the features of mobile devices and PCs become more similar.?

Intel has been providing CPUs for Mac computers since 2005. The processor maker has been floundering in a ?stagnating market for computers running Microsoft?s Windows software.? If Apple decides to go with ARM chipsets for Macs, it could adversely affect Intel. The tech giant is know for being a trendsetter in the computer industry.

Apple Insider also reported that Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu told investors that he believes Apple will move toward ARM processors, but that the switch will take a long time.

ARM processors are just not powerful enough at this time. Wu believes that the mobile chipset will eventually be powerful enough and Apple will move toward making its entire line of products ARM-based, which would simplify the architecture of its devices to create a ?more seamless experience for users.?

While Apple may be pushing ARM to make more powerful chipsets, Intel is also working hard to make their own processors less of an energy drain. The main reason that Intel chips never made it into Apple mobile devices is that their CPUs are only capable of four to five hours of battery life, compared to ARM?s 10 hours.

It is just as likely that Intel could work out the technology to make their chips more efficient and then ARM would become the obsolete processor.

US military delegation visits Egypt's Sinai

EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? Egyptian and American officials say the deputy commander of the U.S. Central Command is paying a visit to American troops stationed in Egypt's troubled Sinai Peninsula, which has been plagued by lawlessness and hit by a string of militant attacks.

U.S. officials described Monday's visit by Vice Adm. Robert Harward as routine.

U.S. troops make up the single largest contingent of the 1,650-strong Multinational Force and Observers mission in Sinai.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

U.S. lacked jurisdiction in Panama drug case: appeals court

(Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled that the U.S. government had exceeded its powers by prosecuting four suspected drug traffickers arrested in the territorial waters of Panama.

A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta reversed the convictions of the four men, saying the United States could not assert jurisdiction over the drug trafficking offenses in the case.

The question at issue, which the appeals court said it was taking up for the first time, was whether a clause of the U.S. Constitution allows for U.S. prosecution of drug trafficking offenses in the territorial waters of another country.

In finding that it did not, the appeals court said the clause, which gives the U.S. Congress the power to go after "Offences against the Law of Nations," extended only to crimes recognized as such by international law.

Drug trafficking was not a violation of international law when the United States was founded in the 18th century, the opinion said, "and drug trafficking is not a violation of customary international law today."

Alicia Valle, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors in Miami, declined comment. Tracy Dreispul, a defense attorney on the appeal, had no immediate comment.

Panamanian authorities arrested the four defendants in 2010 after the U.S. Coast Guard alerted the Panamanian Navy that it had spotted a fishing boat operating with no lights and without a flag.

After cocaine was discovered on the boat, which was in Panamanian waters, the defendants were arrested. Panama agreed to let the United States prosecute the four, the opinion said.

The defendants pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy charge and were sentenced to prison.

Federal prosecutors in Miami argued that under the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act, the United States could go after suspected drug traffickers using boats in international waters and that Panama had authorized the prosecution.

The case is USA v. Yimmi Bellaizac-Hurtado et al., U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, Nos. 11-14049, 11-14227, 11-14310, 11-14311).
