May 30, 2013 ? A sequence of radar images of asteroid 1998 QE2 was obtained on the evening of May 29, 2013, by NASA scientists using the 230-foot (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif., when the asteroid was about 3.75 million miles (6 million kilometers) from Earth, which is 15.6 lunar distances.
The radar imagery revealed that 1998 QE2 is a binary asteroid. In the near-Earth population, about 16 percent of asteroids that are about 655 feet (200 meters) or larger are binary or triple systems. Radar images suggest that the main body, or primary, is approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) in diameter and has a rotation period of less than four hours. Also revealed in the radar imagery of 1998 QE2 are several dark surface features that suggest large concavities. The preliminary estimate for the size of the asteroid's satellite, or moon, is approximately 2,000 feet (600 meters) wide. The radar collage covers a little bit more than two hours.
The radar observations were led by scientist Marina Brozovic of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
The closest approach of the asteroid occurs on May 31 at 1:59 p.m. Pacific (4:59 p.m. Eastern / 20:59 UTC), when the asteroid will get no closer than about 3.6 million miles (5.8 million kilometers), or about 15 times the distance between Earth and the moon. This is the closest approach the asteroid will make to Earth for at least the next two centuries. Asteroid 1998 QE2 was discovered on Aug. 19, 1998, by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program near Socorro, N.M.
The resolution of these initial images of 1998 QE2 is approximately 250 feet (75 meters) per pixel. Resolution is expected to increase in the coming days as more data become available. Between May 30 and June 9, radar astronomers using NASA's 230-foot-wide (70 meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif., and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, will perform an extensive campaign of observations on asteroid 1998 QE2. The two telescopes have complementary imaging capabilities that will enable astronomers to learn as much as possible about the asteroid during its brief visit near Earth.
Radar is a powerful technique for studying an asteroid's size, shape, rotation state, surface features and surface roughness, and for improving the calculation of asteroid orbits. Radar measurements of asteroid distances and velocities often enable computation of asteroid orbits much further into the future than if radar observations weren't available.
NASA places a high priority on tracking asteroids and protecting our home planet from them. In fact, the United States has the most robust and productive survey and detection program for discovering near-Earth objects. To date, U.S. assets have discovered more than 98 percent of the known Near-Earth Objects.
In 2012, the Near-Earth Object budget was increased from $6 million to $20 million. Literally dozens of people are involved with some aspect of near-Earth object research across NASA and its centers. Moreover, there are many more people involved in researching and understanding the nature of asteroids and comets, including those objects that come close to Earth, plus those who are trying to find and track them in the first place.
In addition to the resources NASA puts into understanding asteroids, it also partners with other U.S. government agencies, university-based astronomers, and space science institutes across the country that are working to track and better understand these objects, often with grants, interagency transfers and other contracts from NASA.
NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at NASA Headquarters, Washington, manages and funds the search, study, and monitoring of asteroids and comets whose orbits periodically bring them close to Earth. JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
In 2016, NASA will launch a robotic probe to one of the most potentially hazardous of the known Near-Earth Objects. The OSIRIS-REx mission to asteroid (101955) Bennu will be a pathfinder for future spacecraft designed to perform reconnaissance on any newly-discovered threatening objects. Aside from monitoring potential threats, the study of asteroids and comets enables a valuable opportunity to learn more about the origins of our solar system, the source of water on Earth, and even the origin of organic molecules that lead to the development of life.
NASA recently announced development of a first-ever mission to identify, capture and relocate an asteroid for human exploration. Using game-changing technologies this mission would mark an unprecedented technological achievement that raises the bar of what humans can do in space. Capturing and redirecting an asteroid will integrate the best of NASA's science, technology and human exploration capabilities and draw on the innovation of America's brightest scientists and engineers.

May 30, 2013 ? Leading world climate change experts have thrown cold water on the idea that planting trees can offset carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels.
Professor Brendan Mackey of Griffith University Climate Change Response Program is the lead author of an international study involving researchers from Australia and the U.K. Their findings are reported in "Untangling the confusion around land carbon science and climate change mitigation policy," published in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change.
"While protecting and restoring natural forests is part of the solution, the reality is that for all practical purposes fossil fuel CO2 emissions are irreversible," Professor Mackey said.
The findings highlight the urgent need for policy-makers worldwide to re-think the issue as many decision-makers, national and internationally, assume that fossil fuel emissions can be offset through sequestering carbon by planting trees and other land management practices.
"There is a danger in believing that land carbon sinks can solve the problem of atmospheric carbon emissions because this legitimises the ongoing use of fossil fuels," Professor Mackey said.
The study found that protecting natural forests avoids emissions that would otherwise result from logging and land clearing while also conserving biodiversity. Restoring degraded ecosystems or planting new forests helps store some of the carbon dioxide that was emitted from past land use activities.
"These land management actions should be rewarded as they are an important part of the solution," Professor Mackay said.
"However, no amount of reafforestation or growing of new trees will ultimately off-set continuing CO2 emissions due to environmental constraints on plant growth and the large amounts of remaining fossil fuel reserves.
"Unfortunately there is no option but to cut fossil fuel emissions deeply as about a third of the CO2 stays in the atmosphere for 2 to 20 millennia."

South Carolina state Sen. Vincent Sheheen (Getty Images)
COLUMBIA, S.C. ? South Carolina Democratic state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who is planning to challenge Republican Gov. Nikki Haley in 2014, says he wants nothing to do with Washington?but not in quite the same way Haley does.
"I don't keep up with what's going on nationally," Sheheen told Yahoo News in an interview earlier this month at the headquarters of the state Democratic Party.
Does he support the push for federal immigration reform currently going through Congress? "I don't really know enough about that to tell you."
What's his specific plan to implement the national health care law that passed in 2010? "I can't give you a detailed answer because I haven't studied it."
Sheheen, 42, a tall, floppy-haired, half-Lebanese, half-Italian lawmaker with an easygoing drawl, isn't clueless. His hesitancy to talk about Washington's priorities is part of an intentional effort to cast his opponent as an out-of-touch state executive who cares more about what's happening along the banks of the Potomac than at home along the Santee.
Since moving into the governor's mansion, Haley has become a nationally renowned conservative icon despite tepid approval ratings at home. Among South Carolina adults, Haley had a statewide approval rating of 43.5 percent and a disapproval rating of 36.6 percent, according to a Winthrop University poll conducted in April. The same poll taken a year earlier showed her with 37.3 percent approval.
But Haley is wildly popular on the right and enjoys nearly 70 percent approval among Republican and Republican-leaning voters in South Carolina, according to the poll. During her governorship, she has traveled the country to motivate conservative allies while railing against the mandates, regulations and tax increases coming from the nation's capital.
She talks about Washington a lot.
That's precisely where Sheheen plans to hit her hardest.
"She talks incessantly about national issues," Sheheen told Yahoo News. "She rarely talks about South Carolina issues. I'll talk about those policies, and I'll talk about those ideas. And while I do that, she'll be talking about Washington, D.C. She'll be talking about national political figures. Because that's what she's all about. She's made Columbia more like Washington, D.C., and my job is to make it less like Washington, D.C."
With about 19 months to go before the election, Sheheen is trying to define Haley early. In 2010, when she beat him by 4.4 percentage points, the cards were stacked against Democrats, as conservative candidates like Haley coasted into office on the national tea party wave.
Looking back, Sheheen saw himself within striking distance, and this time, he thinks he can use Haley's record against her while benefiting from an election year that will likely be more friendly to his party than 2010.
This time, Haley is an incumbent with a record that opponents can use against her. Sheheen says he can capitalize on her shortcomings to make up the ground he'll need to bridge the gap from the last election.
"There's a much greater opportunity in this election to draw contrasts between a positive agenda to move forward and the same old, same old," he told Yahoo News.
As a Democrat in a red state, Sheheen faces obvious statistical hurdles. An attorney first elected in 2004, he has been in the minority his entire political career.
On Election Day, it will have been 11 years since a Democrat held the governor's mansion. The state Senate and House haven't been majority blue since 1996 and 1994, respectively.
While he'll be required to show contrasts between himself and Haley, Sheheen refuses to call himself a liberal.
"I consider myself a pragmatist," Sheheen said.
That balance can be a tricky one.
While he doesn't like to dwell on national issues, as governor, Sheheen would be responsible for guiding the implementation of the federal health care law?a task Haley has refused. (At the state party convention in May, Haley told fellow Republicans that South Carolina will "never allow Obamacare to enter into this state.") Since the federal law passed three years ago, Haley has made every effort to push back against the state-based health insurance exchanges or expand Medicaid in the state.
"Haley has said no, and that's clearly stupid," Sheheen told Yahoo News. "It's stupid because it's our money, and she's going to send it to another state."
His willingness to adopt the state mandates in the law, he was careful to add, doesn't mean he approves of the law.
"I didn't support Obamacare, but we are where we are, and we have to work with what we have to work with," he told Yahoo News. "I opposed the mandates in 2010, and I still feel like that was the wrong approach. I think that there's been a lot of confusion, and I think you need a governor who finds ways to stop the bad things from happening and works to make the good things occur."
And of course, if he does defeat Haley next year, every Democratic presidential hopeful will be knocking down his door seeking an endorsement before the all-important South Carolina primary. Sheheen, who voted for then-Sen. Barack Obama in the 2008 South Carolina Democratic primary, won't say whom he likes in 2016.
But if those candidates come looking for support, he has a response waiting for them: "My question will be, What can you do for South Carolina?"

Dr. Susana T.L. Chung receives Glenn A. Fry Lecture Award for research on 'visual plasticity' in older adults
Philadelphia, Pa. (May 28, 2013) - Perceptual learning techniques may provide a useful new approach to rehabilitation in patients with central vision losstaking advantage of visual plasticity that persists even in old age, according to a special article in the June issue of Optometry and Vision Science, official journal of the American Academy of Optometry. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.
The paper by Susana T.L. Chung, OD, PhD, FAAO, 2012 recipient of the prestigious Glenn A. Fry Lecture Award, presents new research findings on plasticity of the visual system in older adults with central vision loss. Anthony Adams, OD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of Optometry and Vision Science, comments: "This award-winning author explored whether the new 'preferred retinal location' (PRL) in these typically older patients adopted important properties of the original fovea and hence provide evidence that even the older brain's visual cortex shows plasticity."
Evidence of 'Visual Plasticity' in Central Vision Loss
Patients with loss of vision in the central part of the visual field face major challenges for daily living. The most common cause is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is also the leading cause of blindness in older adults. Central vision loss results from destruction of the fovea the central pit of the retina, where visual acuity is sharpest.
Patients with central vision loss have problems with tasks requiring detailed vision, such as reading and recognizing faces. Although magnification can help, "Alternative rehabilitation strategies need to be developed to improve the functional vision of people with central vision loss, which hopefully will lead to an improved quality of life," Dr Chung writes.
One potentially useful approach is "perceptual learning"improving various aspects of sensory function through repeated practice. Perceptual learning can improve vision in younger patients with amblyopia ("lazy eye"). It was previously thought that older patients, like those with AMD, no longer had enough visual plasticity to benefit from this approach.
Dr Chung's research takes advantage of the fact that people with central vision loss often adopt another location in the maculathe so-called preferred retinal locationto perform visual tasks. She reports a series of experiments "demonstrate[ing] the presence of plasticity in the visual system after bilateral central vision loss, especially at and around the PRL."
May Lead to New Rehab Strategies in Central Vision Loss
These results show that "The visual system for these individuals is still plastic and can be modified through experiences," Dr Chung writes. She tested this hypothesis in a preliminary study of six older adults with central vision loss. In these patients, perceptual learning techniques targeting the PRL led to an average 50 percent increase in reading speed.
However, perceptual learning can't improve visual acuitypatients still needed large-print books or magnification to see print. In addition, they would likely need continued practice in order to retain the improvement in reading speed. Dr Chung concludes, "The presence of this experience-dependent plasticity offers us an exciting opportunity to adopt perceptual learning as an alternative rehabilitative strategy for improving visual functions for people with central vision loss."
Dr. Chung received the 2012 Glenn A. Fry Lecture Award in recognition of her research contributions. This prestigious award was established by American Optometric Foundation to honor Dr. Glenn A. Fry, who contributed so much to the profession of optometry through his writings, teachings, and administrative duties at the Ohio State University.

While you could have been given redesigning advice from various people, it?s important you spend some time to keep yourself well-informed. This might take a bit of time, but it will be definitely worth it. Within the following paragraphs, you?ll find excellent suggestions and tips.
You shouldn?t trash bedroom doors simply because of some dirt. Instead, take your home off of the frame, and after that sand it until you will notice the bare wood. Get some good oil-based paint that you would like and paint it employing a paint roller. For doors that you would like to appear new, try getting doorknobs that look fancier.
If you want the assistance of professionals to finish your own home improvement project, you?ll wish to deal just with reputable companies. An organization that is not going to list an organization address and conducts business primarily by telephone is most likely small, and possibly not reputable. Try to complement businesses that use a strong reputation.
Try shifting your furniture out of your walls as a means to make your room appear larger. Additionally, this will give your home a contemporary look.
In case your old bed set looks somewhat old so you are an ambitious person, you should try building your very own bed furniture. Even if this task is tough, you can create beautiful furniture styled instantly to your own personal taste.
Choose low-maintenance options when making your yard. Most low-maintenance yards feature plants that don?t require a lot of water and extensive beds of maintenance-free rock and gravel. The lowest maintenance yard could save you time, and low water requirements will save you money.
Regularly changing the filters inside you home?s furnace and air cooling unit is usually overlooked. Air conditioners with clogged and dirty filters usually do not operate efficiently. You will use extra energy to help keep your house cool should your ac is working harder. This simply means higher energy bills.
Whenever you comparing bids from contractors, usually do not just base your selection around the price. Labor costs, warranties, and time must be factored in also. You would like the project to become done quickly as well as for a fair price.
Never neglect safety equipment when purchasing redesigning supplies. This can include steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves. Although the safety products will cost you money, they are less than the price of getting hurt. Always wear the protection equipment, too!
When you select a home improvement project, consider the way it will raise the value of your residence. As one example, if you wish to convert an unused attic space in a bedroom or rec room, you can expect to be given a good return on your own investment if you ever choose to sell. Generally, you can get back around 83 percent of the things you spend.
Are you currently thinking of whether vinyl siding may be beneficial that you can improve your home with? Vinyl siding can be a particularly good option when you are planning a task that can recoup its value when it?s time to sell. You should get back around 80 % of the initial investment.
Prior to deciding which home remodeling project to accomplish, clean your entire home completely. By cleaning, you can try your home from the new perspective and opt for what should be done one of the most. This too makes your property better to check out plus more comfortable.
You should apply these pointers to help make some significant changes to your residence. While you could have already known several of this info, we hope that you have either reinforced your present knowledge, or learned something totally new. You have to put these pointers to work with now.
Thanks for reading. For more tips on home improvement and making your house look the best, including information on door handle and lock, carpets uk and kitchen recycle bin please see our website

PARIS (AP) ? Rafael Nadal hopped, spun and threw an overhand punch toward his friends and family, stirring memories of past celebrations on his favorite stage.
After more than 90 minutes of tense tennis, Nadal had finally won a set, leaving him only 20 sets from another French Open championship.
The Spaniard survived an early scare Monday and successfully began his bid for an eighth title at Roland Garros by rallying past Daniel Brands of Germany, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3.
Nadal, who had lost only 14 sets in 53 previous matches at the French Open, fell behind when he was broken in the ninth game and was on the verge of digging a deeper hole in the red clay. He trailed 3-0 in the tiebreaker, then summoned his best shot-making to salvage the set and soon was in control against the dangerous Brands.
"He was playing unbelievable," Nadal said. "He was trying to hit every ball as hard as he can. Sometimes you feel you are not hitting a bad shot, and every time comes back a bomb. So I am very happy to be through, seriously."
Nadal, who won a record seventh French Open title last year, improved to 53-1 at Roland Garros. He's 37-2 since returning in February after a seven-month layoff because of a left knee injury, reaching the finals at all eight tournaments he played and winning six.
Defending women's champion Maria Sharapova needed only 54 minutes to advance, beating Hsieh Su-wei 6-2, 6-1. The No. 2-seeded Sharapova lost eight points in eight service games.
While Nadal took center stage, U.S. women fanned out to remote courts and quietly went 6-1. That included victories by Madison Keys, who won her Roland Garros debut, and by Melanie Oudin, who ousted No. 28 Tamira Paszek 6-4, 6-3. No. 17 Sloane Stephens, who reached the fourth round last year, beat Karin Knapp 6-2, 7-5.
American Ryan Harrison won a match at Roland Garros for the first time in three tries, beating Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Harrison next plays fellow American and good friend John Isner, who improved to 4-4 at Roland Garros by beating Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Li Na, the 2011 women's champion, beat nemesis Anabel Medina Garrigues in her opening match, 6-3, 6-4. Agnieszka Radwanska, last year's runner-up at Wimbledon, defeated Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-1.
The 6-foot-5 Brands, ranked 59th, came into his match against Nadal with an 0-4 career record at Roland Garros. But he gained a foothold with his big forehand and serves of up to 134 mph, while Nadal's feared groundstrokes lacked their normal depth and force at the outset.
The capacity crowd on center court sensed a possible upset and began rooting for Brands. But he gave Nadal an opening in the tiebreaker, blowing an easy backhand approach to make it 3-all.
"I was too sure to win the point and lost a little bit of concentration," Brands said. "That shouldn't happen against him."
From there the match quickly turned. On set point Nadal stretched to crack a backhand return into the corner for a winner, sparking his first celebration of the day.
"Winning the tiebreak, well, it was just like some oxygen," Nadal said. "I could finally breathe."
He earned his first service break of the match in the third set and held the rest of the way, serving better once he had the lead.
Seeded third but a heavy favorite, Nadal won his 16th consecutive match, and he improved to 34-0 in the first round at Grand Slams. He's trying to become the first man to win eight titles at the same major event.
Li, seeded No. 6, entered her match against Medina Garrigues with an 0-3 record on clay versus the Spaniard, but raced to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes and broke serve six times.
Former top-ranked player Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark ended a five-match losing streak by defeating Laura Robson 6-3, 6-2.
No. 4 Radwanska needed less than hour to advance. It was her first match since withdrawing before last week's Brussels tournament with a recurrence of the right shoulder injury that has bothered her the past couple of years.
"I decided to have a week of rest and just practice," she said. "I think it was a good move."
She'll next play American Mallory Burdette, who won in her Roland Garros debut Sunday. Radwanska was asked what she knew about her second-round opponent.
"To be honest, not much. Nothing at all, actually," she said with a smile. "I might Google her."
The search for the next generation of U.S. stars has been ongoing, which made Monday's success notable. Keys beat Misaki Doi 6-3, 6-2; Vania King defeated Alexandra Cadantu 7-6 (3), 6-1; Bethanie Mattek-Sands eliminated Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 6-1; and No. 29 Varvara Lepchenko beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-1, 6-2.
"It's funny, because a couple of years ago, everyone was asking me: Where is women's tennis?" Mattek-Sands said. "Here we are now."
American Christina McHale lost to Jana Cepelova of Slovakia 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4.
On the men's side, Michael Russell of the United States retired with a left hamstring injury trailing Martin Klizan 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Klizan plays Nadal in the second round.
Wild card Gael Monfils of France thrilled a partisan center court crowd by upsetting No. 5 Tomas Berdych in a match that ended at twilight, 7-6 (8), 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5. Nick Kyrgios of Australia, at 18 the youngest player in the men's draw, made a successful Grand Slam debut by beating 34-year-old Radek Stepanek 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (11).

May 25, 2013 ? Coenzyme Q10 decreases all cause mortality by half, according to the results of a multicentre randomised double blind trial presented today at Heart Failure 2013 congress. It is the first drug to improve heart failure mortality in over a decade and should be added to standard treatment, according to lead author Professor Svend Aage Mortensen (Copenhagen, Denmark).
Heart Failure 2013 is being held from 25-28 May in Lisbon, Portugal. It is the main annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (1).
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) occurs naturally in the body and is essential to survival. CoQ10 works as an electron carrier in the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cells, to produce energy and is also a powerful antioxidant. It is the only antioxidant that humans synthesise in the body.
CoQ10 levels are decreased in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure, with the deficiency becoming more pronounced as heart failure severity worsens. Statins are used to treat many patients with heart failure because they block the synthesis of cholesterol, but these drugs also block the synthesis of CoQ10, which further decreases levels in the body.
Double blind controlled trials have shown that CoQ10 improves symptoms, functional capacity and quality of life in patients with heart failure with no side effects. But until now, no trials have been statistically powered to address effects on survival.
The Q-SYMBIO study (2) randomised 420 patients with severe heart failure (New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class III or IV) to CoQ10 or placebo and followed them for 2 years. The primary endpoint was time to first major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) which included unplanned hospitalisation due to worsening of heart failure, cardiovascular death, urgent cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. Participating centres were in Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, India, Malaysia and Australia.
CoQ10 halved the risk of MACE, with 29 (14%) patients in the CoQ10 group reaching the primary endpoint compared to 55 (25%) patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio=2; p=0.003). CoQ10 also halved the risk of dying from all causes, which occurred in 18 (9%) patients in the CoQ10 group compared to 36 (17%) patients in the placebo group (hazard ratio=2.1; p=0.01).
CoQ10 treated patients had significantly lower cardiovascular mortality (p=0,02) and lower occurrence of hospitalisations for heart failure (p=0.05). There were fewer adverse events in the CoQ10 group compared to the placebo group (p=0.073).
Professor Mortensen said: "CoQ10 is the first medication to improve survival in chronic heart failure since ACE inhibitors and beta blockers more than a decade ago and should be added to standard heart failure therapy."
He added: "Other heart failure medications block rather than enhance cellular processes and may have side effects. Supplementation with CoQ10, which is a natural and safe substance, corrects a deficiency in the body and blocks the vicious metabolic cycle in chronic heart failure called the energy starved heart."
CoQ10 is present in food, including red meat, plants and fish, but levels are insufficient to impact on heart failure. CoQ10 is also sold over the counter as a food supplement but Professor Mortensen said: "Food supplements can influence the effect of other medications including anticoagulants and patients should seek advice from their doctor before taking them."
Patients with ischaemic heart disease who use statins could also benefit from CoQ10 supplementation. Professor Mortensen said: "We have no controlled trials demonstrating that statin therapy plus CoQ10 improves mortality more than statins alone. But statins reduce CoQ10, and circulating CoQ10 prevents the oxidation of LDL effectively, so I think ischaemic patients should supplement statin therapy with CoQ10."
